				<title>Abstract</title>
				<p>The importance of geographic education and its ability to develop spatial critical thinking has increased in recent years due to the advancement of new technologies and geolocation. Mastery of these technologies requires the acquisition of key competencies essential for educating citizens who will shape societies characterized by sustainable development. This study analyses and illustrates the perception of global change and sustainability among university students. The methodology involves the design and implementation of a questionnaire, applied within the framework of participatory field trips that include the collection of real data, to introduce students to the use of geotechnologies such as ArcGIS StoryMaps and Survey123. The application takes place in Geography courses within the Primary Education Teaching Degree and the master&#x2019;s degree in Secondary Education Teacher Training at several Spanish universities (two public universities in Castilla-La Mancha and Madrid, and one private university in Madrid). The results reveal significant data regarding the level of understanding and the usefulness of the tool. A greater assimilation of concepts related to sustainability (in topics such as noise, urban planning, etc.) and increased sensitivity to urban sustainability issues are observed.</p>

				<title>Resumen</title>
				<p>La importancia de la educaci&#xf3;n geogr&#xe1;fica y su capacidad para desarrollar un pensamiento cr&#xed;tico espacial se ha visto incrementada en los &#xfa;ltimos a&#xf1;os por el avance de las nuevas tecnolog&#xed;as y la geolocalizaci&#xf3;n. El dominio de estas tecnolog&#xed;as presupone la adquisici&#xf3;n de unas competencias que son claves para la educaci&#xf3;n de los ciudadanos que han de conformar sociedades caracterizadas por la sostenibilidad de su desarrollo. En este trabajo, se analiza y ejemplifica la percepci&#xf3;n del cambio global y de la sostenibilidad con estudiantes universitarios. La metodolog&#xed;a se concreta en el dise&#xf1;o y elaboraci&#xf3;n de un cuestionario, y su aplicaci&#xf3;n en el marco de salidas de campo participativas, con recogida de datos reales, para iniciar al estudiantado en el manejo de geotecnolog&#xed;as como ArcGIS StoryMaps y Survey123. La aplicaci&#xf3;n se enmarca en asignaturas de Geograf&#xed;a del Grado de Maestro de Educaci&#xf3;n Primaria y del M&#xe1;ster de Formaci&#xf3;n del Profesorado de Ense&#xf1;anza Secundaria de varias universidades espa&#xf1;olas (dos universidades p&#xfa;blicas de Castilla-La Mancha y Madrid y una privada de Madrid), y los resultados muestran algunos datos significativos sobre el nivel de comprensi&#xf3;n y la utilidad de la herramienta. Se observa una mayor asimilaci&#xf3;n de los conceptos relacionados con la sostenibilidad (en temas como ruidos, urbanismo, etc.) as&#xed; como una mayor sensibilidad hacia problem&#xe1;ticas de sostenibilidad urbanas.</p>

			<label>1.</label>
			<title>Introduction</title>
			<p>The integration of geotechnologies into the teaching and learning processes of Geography is essential for educating a citizenry that is both aware of and committed to sustainable development. However, to achieve effective implementation, it is necessary for educators to acquire the competencies that enable them to appropriately integrate these tools. In this context, the work is guided by the four competencies proposed by <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="ref-36-1197">Murga Menoyo (2015)</xref>, based on the <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="ref-48-1197">UNESCO report (2014)</xref>: critical analysis, systemic reflection, collaborative decision-making, and a sense of responsibility toward present and future generations.</p>
			<p>The spatial environment of a university campus can be used as a living laboratory for teaching in higher education. This approach allows for the illustration of key geographical concepts, reinforced through field trips and virtual tours. These methods enable the visualization of indicators related to global change&#x2014;an emerging field of research that encompasses various aspects of sustainability. Global change refers to the potential situation in which the processes of an ecosystem, in a specific location, are affected by multiple changes whose interactions&#x2014;through synergies, additions, and other factors&#x2014;are difficult to investigate (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="ref-52-1197">Zhou <italic>et al.</italic>, 2023</xref>). Most of these changes result from the impact of human activities on the territory, such as biodiversity loss.</p>
			<p>Small-scale experiments, such as the one implemented in this study, can raise awareness among higher education students and future non-university educators about global change, allowing them to monitor it from a specific and nearby location. Students can compare academic research with their own direct observations during field trips.</p>
			<p>The first section of this article outlines the research hypothesis and objectives. The second section addresses the theoretical foundations aligned with the previously defined objectives. The third section focuses on the description of the materials developed and the methodology employed to carry out the experience. The fourth section presents the results obtained following the implementation of the experience. Finally, the fifth section is dedicated to the conclusions and discussion, including the identified limitations.</p>
		</sec>
		<sec id="sec-2-1197">
			<label>2.</label>
			<title>Hypothesis and objectives</title>
			<p>The initial hypothesis of this research posits that sustainability education for future teachers (Primary Education teachers and Secondary and Baccalaureate Geography teachers), combined with classical geography methodologies such as field trips and the use of new technologies like geotechnologies, contributes to a better understanding of sustainability-related aspects in their environments.</p>
			<p>Based on this hypothesis, the following research objectives are defined:</p>
			<list list-type="order" id="lst-1-1197">
				<list-item>
					<p>Promote understanding of urban sustainability through geotechnologies. Implement an innovative methodology that incorporates geotechnologies into traditional field trips to enhance comprehension of urban sustainability issues. These tools allow students to directly observe elements related to sustainability in their surroundings, fostering a practical and applied methodological approach that encourages greater interest and engagement.</p>
				</list-item>

					<list list-type="bullet" id="lst-2-1197">
						<list-item>
							<p>Environmental education, with emphasis on environmental safety and health (such as air, water, noise, and visual pollution), urban waste management, energy efficiency, and adaptation to challenges like climate change.</p>
						</list-item>
						<list-item>
							<p>Human geography, focusing on sustainable urban planning (green spaces, access to basic services), sustainable mobility, equity in access to resources and services, community participation for inclusive governance, and the preservation of historical and cultural heritage in urban settings.</p>
						</list-item>
					</list>
					<list list-type="simple" id="lst-3-1197">
						<list-item>
							<p>These topics enable future teachers to understand the complexity of urban sustainability and address the challenges associated with sustainable urbanization.</p>
						</list-item>
					</list>
				</list-item>
				<list-item>
					<p>Develop skills for analyzing and evaluating urban sustainability. Facilitate learning about the conservation status of elements that define sustainability in different environments through the use of geotechnologies during field trips. This approach helps students initiate the observation and analysis of specific indicators, contributing to a more accurate assessment of the degree of urban sustainability.</p>
				</list-item>
			</list>
		</sec>
		<sec id="sec-3-1197">
			<label>3.</label>
			<title>Theoretical framework</title>
			<p>Education for sustainability offers teachers the opportunity to rethink and adopt new methodologies aimed at equipping students with the knowledge and attitudes necessary to face the challenges of today&#x2019;s world (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="ref-26-1197">Haubrich, 1992</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="ref-27-1197">Haubrich <italic>et al.</italic>, 2007</xref>). To understand the context, it is essential to explore the perceptions that future teachers hold regarding sustainability, including the topics they consider relevant within this framework. Furthermore, an analysis of the current educational curriculum for Primary, Compulsory Secondary, and Baccalaureate education stages&#x2014;based on the LOMLOE (approved in Spain in 2020)&#x2014;highlights the potential of this tool as a key means for the comprehensive education of students. In line with this, it is necessary to align the most significant environmental education topics with the Sustainable Development Goals (hereafter SDGs). Finally, several studies are reviewed that point to the challenges posed by sustainability education in urban settings, focusing on processes of observation, analysis, and evaluation. The following sections develop these ideas that underpin sustainability-oriented education.</p>
			<sec id="sec-3.1-1197">
				<label>3.1.</label>
				<title>New Methodological Needs in Sustainability Education in Spain</title>
				<p>Education for Sustainable Development (hereafter ESD) in the teaching of Geography within the Spanish context is a relatively recent approach&#x2014;just over fifteen years in a strict sense, and slightly more than thirty in a broader sense (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="ref-11-1197">Crespo <italic>et al.</italic>, 2021</xref>).</p>
				<p>To understand the methodologies applied in teaching sustainability within geography education in Spain, the authors reviewed the proceedings of the Geography Didactics Conferences organized by the Geography Didactics Group of the Spanish Association of Geography (AGE) from 2011 to 2023. Some of these conferences included the Portuguese context, as they were jointly organized with the Associa&#xe7;&#xe3;o de Professores de Geografia (APROFGEO). During this period, a total of 756 communications, presentations, and posters were produced. Focusing on the topic of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), a keyword search for &#x201c;sustainable,&#x201d; &#x201c;SDGs,&#x201d; and &#x201c;Agenda 2030&#x201d; in titles and keywords yielded 66 relevant works&#x2014;representing 8.7% of the total output over the past decade (<xref ref-type="fig" rid="fig-1-1197">Figure 1</xref>), with a noticeable increase since 2019. </p>

				<p>In the same period and source, 108 works were identified on field trips, didactic itineraries, etc., of which 35 incorporated information and communication technologies or geographic information technologies, particularly Geographic Information Systems (GIS). Only seven studies explicitly linked fieldwork with ESD, and of these, four proposed the use of digital tools. </p>
				<p>Bibliometric studies on evaluation in geography (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="ref-35-1197">Moya <italic>et al.</italic>, 2021</xref>) and the assessment of field trips (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="ref-33-1197">Mateo, 2019</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="ref-39-1197">Ortega <italic>et al.,</italic> 2023</xref>) highlight the scarcity of research in this area and, more significantly, the lack of evaluation criteria in geography didactic experiences and outputs.</p>
				<p>Researchers from the University of Castilla-La Mancha conducted four of the seven studies. <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="ref-28-1197">Jerez (2019)</xref> introduced the concept of &#x201c;didactic hiking&#x201d; as a teaching strategy for sustainable rural development, using both analog and digital cartographic materials (apps, viewers, etc.). Similarly, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="ref-50-1197">Villahermosa <italic>et al.</italic> (2021)</xref> designed an itinerary for 6th-grade students through the Navas de Malag&#xf3;n nature reserve. <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="ref-43-1197">Serrano and Jerez (2021)</xref> compiled teaching experiences involving itineraries with university students from 2004 to 2019 in the Faculties of Education and Geography in Ciudad Real, analyzing the learning outcomes. <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="ref-34-1197">Mateo and Rodr&#xed;guez-Domenech (2023)</xref> focused on initial teacher training in ESD using geotechnologies.</p>
				<p>Professor Boulahrouz from the Faculty of Education in Girona (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="ref-1-1197">2021</xref>) developed a didactic proposal in which students analyze their surrounding territory and identify &#x201c;aspects affecting citizens&#x2019; quality of life, proposing improvements to share with the community,&#x201d; using mobile devices and augmented reality.</p>
				<p>Finally, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="ref-31-1197">Mart&#xed;nez and Yubero (2021)</xref> from the Complutense University of Madrid proposed fieldwork to train future primary teachers in sustainable urban tourism education. <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="ref-12-1197">De L&#xe1;zaro-Torres and G&#xf3;mez (2023)</xref>, from UNED and UCM respectively, investigated the training of Master&#x2019;s students in Secondary Education and Primary Education undergraduates in ESD through virtual field trips and the use of geotechnologies. </p>
				<p>To identify recurring concepts in these seven pioneering studies, the authors analyzed abstracts, keywords, and titles using Excel and the Pro-Word Cloud application (from a total of 1,574 words, the 100 most frequent were selected, excluding common words). <xref ref-type="fig" rid="fig-2-1197">Figure 2</xref> shows the three most frequently used concepts in these early studies on field trips addressing environmental sustainability through geotechnologies: education, didactics, and itinerary. Other terms refer to the topics addressed: urban, rural, tourism, technologies, sustainable development, and sustainability. A final group of frequent words relates to the spatial scale of analysis: province or specific locations such as Castilla-La Mancha, Ciudad Real, or Malag&#xf3;n, indicating regional, provincial, or local scales.</p>

				<label>3.2.</label>
				<title>Topics Education Students Associate with Sustainability</title>
				<p>The indirect approach taken by <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="ref-32-1197">Mart&#xed;nez-Medina and Arrebola (2019)</xref>, through the analysis of sustainability-related activities in Spanish primary education textbooks, reveals that, at least theoretically, students engage with some of these topics. However, the cognitive level is generally low and focused on issues such as environmental problems and recycling (<xref ref-type="fig" rid="fig-3-1197">Figure 3</xref>), which the authors consider clearly insufficient for effective ESD.</p>

				<p>This conclusion supports the idea that while the elements constituting geographic competencies for sustainability are present in the curriculum, they are not adequately developed in textbooks (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="ref-23-1197">Granados, 2011</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="ref-40-1197">Rodr&#xed;guez-Domenech, 2022</xref>).</p>
				<p>It is worth clarifying that the types of activities these authors classify as focused on environmental problems include those related to resource overexploitation, pollution, etc. Examples of such activities might be &#x201c;identifying different types of pollution (noise, light, water, etc.) in a set of images&#x201d; or &#x201c;encouraging students to reflect on the possible consequences of deforestation&#x201d; (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="ref-32-1197">2019</xref>).</p>
				<p>At the university level, particularly among Primary Education undergraduates, the topic has been explored by <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="ref-16-1197">Garc&#xed;a <italic>et al.</italic> (2023)</xref> and <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="ref-42-1197">S&#xe1;nchez and Plaza (2023)</xref>. The latter highlights the significant lack of understanding these future teachers have regarding the concept of sustainability. They report that only 13.9% of responses demonstrate scientific rigor, while 41.7% lack it entirely. In this case, the authors categorize the students&#x2019; definitions of sustainability as shown in <xref ref-type="fig" rid="fig-4-1197">Figure 4</xref>.</p>

				<p>Both the textbook analysis and the university student concept analysis agree in emphasizing that environmental problem-related activities are the most commonly addressed in Primary Education (based on textbook programming), and that environmental concepts are the most frequently associated with sustainability by Primary Education students. Interestingly, while recycling activities are prominently featured in textbooks, they are scarcely mentioned in the students&#x2019; conceptualizations of sustainability.</p>
				<p>The following two subsections analyze two key sources that provide essential topics for effective ESD: the school curriculum and the targets of SDG 11.</p>
				<sec id="sec-3.2.1-1197">
					<label>3.2.1.</label>
					<title>The School Curriculum as a Tool for ESD</title>
					<p>The curriculum is one of the key instruments through which public authorities can guarantee the right to education: &#x201c;it is essential for peace, tolerance, human fulfilment and sustainable development&#x201d; (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="ref-49-1197">Incheon Declaration, Article 5, UNESCO, 2015</xref>). There is no single formula or method for incorporating sustainability into geography education, and not all approaches yield the same level of transformation (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="ref-24-1197">Granados, 2021</xref>). The work of <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="ref-37-1197">Murga-Menoyo <italic>et al.</italic>
						</xref> aligns with the goal of training teachers to develop four competencies identified by UNESCO: systems thinking, critical analysis, collaborative decision-making, and responsibility toward present and future generations, through disciplinary content (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="ref-37-1197">2019</xref>). These authors also mapped the relationship between each of the seventeen SDGs and the subjects in the LOMCE curriculum for secondary education.</p>
					<p>In this regard, the curricula of the three Royal Decrees of the LOMLOE published by the Spanish Ministry of Education for Primary, Compulsory Secondary, and Baccalaureate education have been analyzed (<xref ref-type="table" rid="taw-1-1197">Table 1</xref>).</p>

					<p>As shown, fourteen of the seventeen SDGs are reflected in the Geography-related content. In the three primary education cycles, the subject Natural, Social and Cultural Environment includes twelve of the seventeen SDGs, particularly in Block C: Societies and Territories, which is the most geographically oriented. This block includes sections such as &#x201c;Current Global Challenges,&#x201d; &#x201c;Civic Literacy,&#x201d; and &#x201c;Ecosocial Awareness,&#x201d; and to a lesser extent, &#x201c;Societies Over Time.&#x201d;</p>
					<p>In Compulsory Secondary Education, eleven SDGs are addressed through the subject Geography and History, specifically in Blocks A: Current Global Challenges, B: Societies and Territories, and C: Civic Engagement. In Baccalaureate, twelve SDGs can be addressed through the subject Geography, across its three content blocks: A: Spain, Europe, and Globalization; B: Sustainability of Spain&#x2019;s Physical Environment; and C: Territorial Planning from an Ecosocial Perspective.</p>
					<p>When analyzing the curriculum by SDG, it becomes evident that SDG 1 and all goals from SDG 5 onward are explicitly addressed. The ones not explicitly mentioned are: SDG 2 (Zero Hunger), SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being), and SDG 4 (Quality Education). SDG 2 must be inferred from others, such as SDG 10 (Reduced Inequalities). SDG 3 is explicitly addressed in Block A: Scientific Culture of the Natural, Social and Cultural Environment subject in Primary Education, though not in Block C, which contains the geographic content. In Secondary Education, SDG 3 is covered in other subjects, primarily Biology. Lastly, SDG 4 is more focused on educators and education policymakers.</p>
				</sec>
				<sec id="sec-3.2.2-1197">
					<label>3.2.2.</label>
					<title>Main Environmental Education Topics and SDG 11 Targets</title>
					<p>The main themes emerging from the intersection of environmental education in urban contexts and the targets of SDG 11&#x2014;aimed at achieving more inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable cities&#x2014;can be grouped into nine broad areas: environmental safety, sustainable urban planning, energy efficiency, sustainable mobility, urban waste management, cultural heritage preservation, urban resilience, socioeconomic and environmental equity and citizen participation.</p>
					<p>
						<xref ref-type="table" rid="taw-2-1197">Table 2</xref> highlights how certain environmental education topics are linked to multiple targets or items within SDG 11, reflecting the interconnected nature of these goals and the importance of addressing them in an integrated manner. For example, urban waste management and environmental safety are directly related to Target 11.6, while the preservation of cultural heritage is associated with Target 11.4.</p>
					<p>The scope of environmental education topics related to SDG 11 underscores their complexity and emphasizes the importance of integrating these issues into urban planning and management to achieve sustainable development (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="ref-22-1197">Gonz&#xe1;lez, 2002</xref>).</p>

				<p>The studies conducted by Murga-Menoyo (2008) on the perceptions, values, and attitudes toward sustainable development among groups of high-achieving university students revealed a certain sensitivity to sustainability values. However, the author emphasized the need for a deeper understanding of the environmental crisis and its root causes, as well as the demands of a sustainable development model. Only by grounding this sensitivity in more robust scientific knowledge can it be translated into behaviors committed to the social transformation that sustainability requires.</p>
				<p>Subsequent studies, such as that by <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="ref-44-1197">Sol&#xed;s-Espallargas (2019)</xref>, which examined the perceptions of master&#x2019;s in education students regarding the SDGs, yielded similar results. These studies identified a lack of references to future scenario planning or critical thinking&#x2014;both essential components of sustainability competencies (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="ref-48-1197">UNESCO, 2014</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="ref-37-1197">Murga-Menoyo &amp; Bautista-Cerro, 2019</xref>). However, these investigations generally addressed sustainability perceptions at a global scale.</p>
				<p>Few studies have explored perceptions on the local scale. One notable example is the research by <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="ref-25-1197">Guerrero and L&#xf3;pez (2021)</xref>, who examined how Primary Education students perceive sustainability in the city of C&#xf3;rdoba. They identified five key areas for analyzing sustainability: political and economic conditions, the renewable energy sector, waste treatment, green space planning, and air pollution. Based on this analysis, the students proposed sustainable actions at the local level. The study concluded that students are aware of the need to prepare themselves to address sustainability in their classrooms and to deepen their understanding of the problems and conflicts that such actions may generate.</p>
			</sec>
		</sec>
		<sec id="sec-4-1197" sec-type="materials|methods">
			<label>4.</label>
			<title>Materials and methods</title>
			<sec id="sec-4.1-1197">
				<label>4.1.</label>
				<title>Research Design</title>
				<p>To achieve the research objectives, a quasi-experimental study was conducted using a mixed methodology&#x2014;both quantitative and qualitative. Specifically, a questionnaire was designed and implemented during a series of field trips across university campuses attended by participating students. The aim was to collect data aligned with the research objectives and to introduce students to the use of geotechnologies such as ArcGIS StoryMaps and Survey123 (ESRI).</p>
			</sec>
			<sec id="sec-4.2-1197">
				<label>4.2.</label>
				<title>Participants</title>
				<p>A total of 1,069 students participated in the study. These included second-year students from the Primary Education Teaching Degree at a private university in Madrid (hereafter G1), fourth-year students from the same degree at a public university in Castilla-La Mancha (hereafter G2), and students from the Master&#x2019;s Degree in Secondary Education Teacher Training, specializing in Geography and History, at a public university in Madrid (hereafter G3). All institutions and participants followed the same methodology and used the same digital tool to carry out the project during the 2022/23 academic year.</p>
				<p>In the study, students from G1 and G3 participated in a guided field trip led by a professor, while G2 students conducted an autonomous field trip without the presence of a teacher. The G3 group consisted of students with prior academic backgrounds in Geography, History, or Art History. The sample data are presented in <xref ref-type="table" rid="taw-3-1197">Table 3</xref>.</p>

				<title>Procedures</title>
				<p>The study was conducted in four phases, described below. First, for all three study groups (G1, G2, and G3), a classroom session was held to explain the purpose and structure of the field trip, as well as how to use the ArcGIS Survey123 tool (ESRI&#xae;), a geotechnology that allows the design of geolocated questionnaires with photo capture, specifically created for this study. Detailed instructions were provided regarding the types of images that could be taken, ensuring that no identifiable individuals or vehicle license plates were included.</p>
				<p>Second, two working modalities were established. For G1 and G3, a guided field trip was conducted with the professor, who provided explanations throughout the route and on aspects related to the activity. For G2, students were given time to carry out an autonomous field trip, following the guidance provided during the classroom session. In all cases, the use of the collaborative tool Survey123 (ESRI&#xae;) was mandatory, and students were required to submit at least three entries. This geotechnology allows geolocated photos to be taken on a map (<xref ref-type="fig" rid="fig-5-1197">Figure 5</xref>) and includes a short questionnaire with six items, along with the captured image.</p>

				<p>This data collection enabled statistical analysis of the responses and observations made by the students. </p>
				<p>Finally, a classroom discussion was held, preceded by the creation of an ArcGIS online StoryMap (ESRI&#xae;) using the information collected by the students. The resulting map was enriched with additional information derived from their observations (accessible at <ext-link ext-link-type="uri" xlink:href="https://arcg.is/rW9az" id="exl-2-1197">https://arcg.is/rW9az</ext-link> or <ext-link ext-link-type="uri" xlink:href="https://arcg.is/18PqCi" id="exl-3-1197">https://arcg.is/18PqCi</ext-link>). The discussion promoted self-reflection and the development of critical thinking. <xref ref-type="fig" rid="fig-6-1197">Figure 6</xref> summarizes the methodology described above.</p>

				<label>5.1.</label>
				<title>Implications of Direct Tutoring During Field Trips Using Geotechnology</title>
				<p>As shown in <xref ref-type="fig" rid="fig-7-1197">Figure 7a</xref>, among the groups of future Primary Education teachers, direct tutoring (G1) during the field trip led to more critical observations by students, who collected more information related to &#x201c;unsustainable&#x201d; aspects of their urban environments. In contrast, G2 students had a more positive perception of their surroundings&#x2019; sustainability level (53.7%).</p>
				<p>It is also evident that the use of geotechnologies&#x2014;whether in guided or unguided trips&#x2014;positively influences the perception of unsustainability. Students in guided trips identified more unsustainable processes (53.1%) compared to those in autonomous trips (46.3%) (<xref ref-type="fig" rid="fig-7-1197">Figure 7b</xref>). </p>

				<title>Topics Future Teachers Associate with Sustainability</title>
				<p>As shown in <xref ref-type="fig" rid="fig-8-1197">Figure 8</xref>, most observations related to environmental sustainability were categorized under urban planning (spaces, buildings, etc.), urban solid waste (hereafter USW), and vandalism observed in various locations during the field trip. Other elements&#x2014;perhaps more commonly addressed in the curriculum&#x2014;such as accessibility (transport, use of public and private vehicles, bike lanes, etc.) or green spaces (gardens), were less frequently noted, with values between 10&#x2013;15%.</p>

				<p>The difference in the perception of noise as a pollutant is particularly striking between the guided and unguided groups. In the guided group (G1), noise was considered a factor contrary to sustainability, whereas G2 students barely acknowledged it. Even more notable is the distinct behavior of the Master&#x2019;s students (G3), who showed greater sensitivity to topics such as green spaces, solid waste, urban furniture, and accessibility, but no interest in noise or buildings. This may be due to the fact that the public university campus in Madrid is composed of exclusively academic buildings and large green areas.</p>
			</sec>
			<sec id="sec-5.3-1197">
				<label>5.3.</label>
				<title>Perception of the State of Sustainability Conservation in Participants&#x2019; Cities</title>
				<p>As shown in <xref ref-type="fig" rid="fig-9-1197">Figure 9</xref>, observations regarding the state of sustainability conservation in participants&#x2019; cities vary significantly depending on whether the field trip was guided or not. Although G2 (unguided) students identified fewer unsustainable elements (as seen in <xref ref-type="fig" rid="fig-7-1197">Figure 7a</xref>), they reported a very high percentage of &#x201c;unacceptable&#x201d; conditions, indicating a strong critical awareness of the observed situations. This perception of unacceptability was mainly linked to issues such as urban vandalism and solid waste in the city, reflecting a high level of sensitivity to these problems.</p>

				<p>The behavior of G1 (guided group) was more balanced across all evaluation categories, with similar values for each level of conservation. Regarding the &#x201c;excellent&#x201d; rating, although it was the least frequent in both groups, it was mainly associated with urban planning aspects such as buildings and accessibility.</p>
				<p>G2 students were more critical in their &#x201c;excellent&#x201d; ratings (18.1%) but showed the highest percentage of &#x201c;needs improvement&#x201d; (50.3%).</p>
				<p>G3 (guided Master&#x2019;s students) stood out as the group least likely to rate the state of their university environment as &#x201c;unacceptable&#x201d; (13%), while showing a high percentage (49.1%) of &#x201c;needs improvement.&#x201d; The &#x201c;excellent&#x201d; rating was mostly associated with the condition of green spaces, highlighting the importance of such areas in university settings.</p>
			</sec>
		</sec>
		<sec id="sec-6-1197" sec-type="conclusions|discussion">
			<label>6.</label>
			<title>Discussion and conclusions</title>
			<p>The data collected in this case study, based on a sample of over 1,000 university students involved in education and future teaching careers, allow for the following conclusions to be drawn in relation to the research objectives:</p>
			<p>1. The use of geotechnologies during the field trip was highly effective in fostering the assimilation of new concepts related to sustainability. These concepts, often addressed abstractly in the classroom (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="ref-41-1197">Sandoya, 2003</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="ref-29-1197">Jerez, 2023</xref>), gain significant educational value when students are required to apply them in real-time to define and justify whether an observation is sustainable or not (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="ref-2-1197">Buzo <italic>et. al</italic>., 2022</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="ref-3-1197">Caquard and Dimitrovas, 2017</xref>, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="ref-46-1197">Strachan and Mitchell, 2014</xref>).</p>
			<p>As discussed in section 2.1, although research on sustainability has increased over the past decade -particularly in connection with methodologies such as field trips and, to a lesser extent, the use of geotechnologies (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="ref-34-1197">Mateo and Rodr&#xed;guez-Dom&#xe9;nech, 2023</xref>)- there is still much to explore. Incorporating evaluation into the development of these practices appears essential for generating meaningful improvement proposals (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="ref-35-1197">Moya <italic>et al.</italic>, 2021</xref>).</p>
			<p>2. The educational themes identified for SDG 11 can serve as a framework for developing educational programs that address the environmental, economic, and social dimensions of urban sustainability in an integrated manner (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="ref-21-1197">G&#xf3;mez and Marr&#xf3;n, 2023</xref>). For example, environmental safety and urban waste management&#x2014;topics of interest to Master&#x2019;s students&#x2014;can be adapted for inclusion in Primary Education curricula to foster a holistic understanding of urban challenges from an early age. Similarly, sustainable urban planning, energy efficiency, and sustainable mobility offer opportunities to explore the interconnections between environmental, economic, and social aspects of cities, promoting a more inclusive, experiential, and comprehensive approach to urban sustainability education. </p>
			<p>The relationship between environmental education themes aimed at making cities more inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable (SDG 11), and students&#x2019; perceptions of urban sustainability, reveals a diversity of understanding and prioritization of urban issues depending on the educational level. While Primary Education students (G1 and G2) emphasized noise and visual aspects of urbanism&#x2014;such as deteriorated sidewalks, graffiti-covered buildings, or abandoned structures&#x2014;reflecting concern for their immediate and tangible surroundings, Master&#x2019;s students (G3) focused on more specific and technical issues such as urban waste management, the condition of green areas, accessibility, and the maintenance of urban furniture, indicating a deeper and more specialized understanding of urban sustainability. As seen in the study by <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="ref-42-1197">S&#xe1;nchez and Plaza (2023)</xref>, students tend to focus on environmental aspects (visual and noise pollution, etc.), suggesting that the teaching of economic and social dimensions and their spatial implications in cities still needs further development.</p>
			<p>A deeper qualitative analysis of question 3 from the questionnaire (mentioned in section 4.3) reveals that some students not only justified their observations but also proposed specific actions to improve the sustainability of the observed environment. However, this qualitative analysis will be presented in future research.</p>
			<p>3. Finally, regarding the assessment of sustainability levels, students demonstrated a widespread sensitivity to urban vandalism and solid waste. However, a broader range of issues was considered when the field trip was guided by a professor. Other studies (Murga-Menoyo and Bautista-Cerro, 2008; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="ref-44-1197">Sol&#xed;s-Espallargas, 2019</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="ref-25-1197">Guerrero and L&#xf3;pez, 2021</xref>) also reported greater student sensitivity to environmental problems, although they did not involve the visualization and sharing of specific unsustainable situations as was done through the method presented here.</p>
			<p>It should be noted, however, that this study has some limitations. For instance, the sample included significantly more Primary Education students than Secondary Education students. Additionally, the university campuses analyzed were heterogeneous in nature, meaning the environments visited and analyzed by students varied considerably.</p>
			<p>Despite these limitations, the proposed objectives were achieved, and future research could further explore the outcomes of field trips using geotechnologies. For example, this study could be replicated to examine how students&#x2019; perceptions of sustainability in their university environments evolve over time. In fact, the study has been replicated in subsequent years, progressively enhancing the StoryMap based on the map generated from the 2022&#x2013;2023 field trip (<xref ref-type="fig" rid="fig-5-1197">Figure 5</xref>), enriched with data from later iterations.</p>
			<p>Integrating geotechnologies into initial teacher training in Geography is crucial for fostering the development of key competencies in sustainability education and for enhancing spatial and digital skills. The use of citizen science and tools such as ArcGIS StoryMaps and Survey123 in participatory field trips are effective strategies for achieving this goal, as demonstrated in the reviewed scientific literature. Often, global change is not perceived until students are immersed in evidence from research&#x2014;whether through direct observation in the field or through virtual journeys and subsequent analysis (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="ref-30-1197">Leininger-Fr&#xe9;zal <italic>et al.</italic>, 2023</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="ref-45-1197">Sprenger <italic>et al.</italic>, 2025</xref>).</p>
