				<title>Abstract</title>
				<p>The boom in the use of Geographic Information Technologies (GITs) in the educational sphere, due both to their value as a didactic resource and their potential as a pedagogical strategy, has significantly transformed geography teaching in recent years. Tools such as story maps, which make it easier to access and interpret geographic information, have created new teaching strategies and scenarios, which are particularly effective for teaching and learning fundamental concepts in geographic education today, such as sustainable development and climate change.</p>
				<p>The aim of this research is to analyse the potential applications of story maps in Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) that can enhance interactive learning and help develop spatial skills for problem-solving. To this end, we carry out a review of the bibliography in order to analyse the current role of story maps in geographic education in general and in ESD in particular. We then explore in greater depth the latest tendencies regarding their application in ESD, before going on to offer some final reflections and proposals on this issue.</p>
				<p>Our review highlights that although story maps have great potential as a teaching resource, in the ESD field there is significant room for improvement as regards the best ways to use them to maximum advantage. It is vital to improve teacher training on this question so as to enable the generalized, widespread implementation of story maps at all the different levels of the educational system.</p>

				<title>Resumen</title>
				<p>El auge de las Tecnolog&#xed;as de la Informaci&#xf3;n Geogr&#xe1;fica (TIG) en el &#xe1;mbito educativo, tanto por su inter&#xe9;s como recurso did&#xe1;ctico como por su potencial como estrategia pedag&#xf3;gica, ha transformado significativamente la did&#xe1;ctica de la geograf&#xed;a en los &#xfa;ltimos a&#xf1;os. En concreto, herramientas como los story maps, que facilitan el acceso a la informaci&#xf3;n geogr&#xe1;fica y su interpretaci&#xf3;n, han generado nuevos escenarios y estrategias docentes especialmente aptas para ense&#xf1;ar y aprender contenidos fundamentales en la educaci&#xf3;n geogr&#xe1;fica actual, tales como el desarrollo sostenible o el cambio clim&#xe1;tico.</p>
				<p>Este trabajo tiene como objetivo analizar las posibilidades que ofrecen los story maps en materia de Educaci&#xf3;n para el Desarrollo Sostenible (EDS), favoreciendo el aprendizaje interactivo y el desarrollo de la competencia espacial orientada a la resoluci&#xf3;n de problemas. Para ello se realiza una revisi&#xf3;n bibliogr&#xe1;fica con la finalidad de analizar el papel actual de los story maps en la educaci&#xf3;n geogr&#xe1;fica en general y en la EDS en particular. Posteriormente, se profundiza en las tendencias m&#xe1;s recientes en cuanto a su aplicaci&#xf3;n para la EDS y, finalmente, se detallan algunas reflexiones y propuestas al respecto.</p>
				<p>Se concluye que, aunque el potencial de los story maps como recurso did&#xe1;ctico es prometedor, en el &#xe1;mbito de la EDS existe un margen de mejora significativo en cuanto a su uso y aprovechamiento. Es primordial ahondar en la formaci&#xf3;n del profesorado a este respecto para facilitar su implantaci&#xf3;n generalizada en el sistema educativo, as&#xed; como promover su uso en las diferentes etapas educativas.</p>

			<label>1.</label>
			<title>Introduction</title>
			<p>Geographic education is fundamental for the development of ecosocial awareness and the promotion of sustainable development. The fact that geography is a science of the territory and that it is taught at all the different stages of education in most countries make it an ideal discipline for explaining and raising awareness about such complex phenomena as pollution and climate change. The increase in the use of Geographic Information Technologies (GITs) in education has made it much easier to approach issues of this kind and has reinforced the important role they play in this field. Instruments such as story maps, an application for creating photographic or cartographic itineraries which make geographical information more attractive and more accessible, are opening up new possibilities for promoting ESD through geography.</p>
			<p>In this paper, we begin by exploring the role that geographic education is currently playing in ESD. We then go on to detail the transformations induced by the introduction of GITs into geographic education in the particular field of ESD in recent times. Finally, we study the specific case of story maps by making a review of the scientific literature on their use in this context.</p>
			<sec id="sec-1.1-1204">
				<label>1.1.</label>
				<title>Geographic Education and Education for Sustainable Development</title>
				<p>Concern about the negative effects of human activities on the environment should not be viewed as a recent trend. Some historical examples include the laws that regulated access to natural resources or urban health in Ancient Rome (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="ref-48-1204">Ruiz-Pino, 2017</xref>), the sustainable exploitation of forests in the Middle Ages (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="ref-50-1204">Soriano, 2003</xref>) or the first conservationist legislation in the mid-19th century<xref ref-type="fn" rid="fn-1-1204">

					</xref>.</p>
				<p>Environmental Education (EE) first appeared at the end of the 1960s in response to what became known as the <italic>Great Acceleration</italic>, which began in the previous decade and which constituted the fastest, most profound alteration of the Earth&#x2019;s systems in all our history. It was characterized by exponential population growth, mass consumption, economic development and urban expansion. In the United Nations Conference on the Human Environment held in Stockholm in 1972, EE was proposed as an essential action strategy to encourage people to participate in solving the environmental problems generated by societies (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="ref-33-1204">Ministerio de Medio Ambiente, 1999</xref>). 15 years later at the International Congress on Environmental Education and Training (organized jointly by UNESCO<xref ref-type="fn" rid="fn-2-1204">
						<sup>2</sup>
					</xref> and UNEP<xref ref-type="fn" rid="fn-3-1204">
						<sup>3</sup>
					</xref>) in Moscow in 1987, it was defined as &#x201c;a permanent process in which individuals and the community become aware of their environment and acquire knowledge, values, competencies, the experience and the will capable of making them act, individually and collectively, to solve the current and future problems of the environment&#x201d;. At this Congress it was agreed that EE should be present in both formal and non-formal education, in schools and in society in general. In terms of curriculum contents, rather than setting up EE as a separate subject, it was suggested that it should be embedded across the whole curriculum (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="ref-36-1204">Novo, 2009</xref>). In that same year, the World Commission on Environment and Development published <italic>Our Common Future</italic> (Brundtland Report), in which the concept of sustainable development was officially defined.</p>
				<p>The Commission on Geographical Education of the International Geographical Union (IGU) was approved in 1952 and presented its First Charter on Geographical Education in <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="ref-21-1204">1992</xref>. Based on the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, it identified geographical education as an ideal vehicle for proposing solutions to the big global problems, all of which had a spatial dimension<xref ref-type="fn" rid="fn-4-1204">

					</xref>.</p>
				<p>In the Charter, it states that &#x201c;the United Nations Conference on the Environment and Development (Geneva, 1991) reported that environmental and development education at all levels and for all peoples is crucial in ensuring the sustainable development of the world&#x201d; and that &#x201c;geographical education contributes to this objective by ensuring that individuals become aware of the impact of their behaviour and of their societies, have access to accurate information and skills that enable them to make environmentally sound decisions and develop an environmental ethic that guides their actions&#x201d; (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="ref-21-1204">IGU, 1992</xref>).</p>
				<p>In December 2002, the United Nations General Assembly declared 2005-2014 as the Decade of Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) in order to try to reorient education towards sustainability, promoting and integrating the principles, values and practices of sustainable development in all aspects of education. UNESCO identifies ESD as the response to the urgent challenges our planet is facing, emphasizing that efforts should focus on specific building blocks. In relation to the current discussion, one of these blocks highlights the need to transform learning environments by applying innovative teaching and learning processes, with a focus on practice and problem-solving in real-world contexts. Furthermore, it recommends implementing an education system centered on climate change (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="ref-51-1204">UNESCO, 2021</xref>). According to UNESCO, ESD &#x201c;provides the necessary knowledge, skills, values and power to act to overcome the interrelated world challenges which we must face, such as climate change, the loss of biodiversity, non-sustainable use of resources and inequalities&#x201d;. The permanent ongoing changes in the relationship between societies and the planet mean that ESD must be a lifelong learning process. Its objective is to create citizens who act responsibly in terms of their everyday lifestyles, so as to be able to revert the trend towards the deterioration of the global system in both its environmental and social dimensions. In response to the United Nations Decade for Education for Sustainable Development in Lucerne in 2007, the IGU Commission on Geographic Education issued the Declaration on Geographical Education for Sustainable Development. It broadened the previous Declaration of 1992 and emphasized three fundamental aspects: a) the contribution of geography to ESD, b) the criteria for developing geographical curricula for ESD and c) the importance of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) in ESD in geography.</p>
				<p>As regards the first question, it is important to highlight the proposal set out in the Declaration regarding the integration of the sustainable development paradigm into geography teaching at all levels and from the perspective of its three dimensions: nature, economy and society (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="ref-22-1204">IGU, 2007</xref>). It lists a set of ideal geographical competencies to enhance sustainable development - knowledge, skills, attitudes and values &#x2013; together with other interdisciplinary competencies related above all with the analysis of the causes and effects of global problems. In the next IGU Commission Charter on Geographical Education, geography was defined as &#x201c;the study of Earth and its natural and human environments.&#x201d; (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="ref-23-1204">IGU, 2016</xref>). It is therefore an ideal science for understanding the functioning of the world system, in terms of both its physical base and the interrelations and interactions of societies with the environment. It can also equip learners with the ability to analyse processes at different scales (local, regional and global), an essential skill to enable them to think critically about the repercussions of human actions.</p>
				<p>As regards the curricular development of ESD, the idiosyncrasy of geography as a social science, an Earth science and a science of landscape makes it an ideal discipline for hosting ESD. This does not mean that geography should abandon its wide diversity of fields of study or that ESD should be completely confined within the geographic sphere. In fact, a &#x201c;sustainabilization&#x201d; of all areas of knowledge must be carried out (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="ref-20-1204">Granados, 2011</xref>). Concerning geographical education and its objectives, we believe that ESD can and must be an end in itself, helping us achieve a sustainable way of thinking and acting that can be arrived at through geographical thought.</p>
				<p>Finally, the third fundamental aspect of the Lucerne declaration referred to &#x201c;the importance of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) in ESD in Geography&#x201d;. It also stated that &#x201c;its specific potential for ESD in Geography lies in the interactivity of the tool, in its suitability for self- directed and cooperative learning arrangements and in its enormous richness in terms of attractive up-to-date contents and learning opportunities for topics concerning ESD&#x201d; (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="ref-22-1204">IGU, 2007</xref>). This is how it viewed the opportunities that digital technologies offer teachers to diversify the methods they use for teaching and learning the geographical contents related with ESD. The access that GITs offer to a large amount of updated, verified information and their capacity to organize, process, interpret and relate it makes them ideal tools for carrying out research projects in the classroom, both during the analysis process and later when presenting the results. In the case in question, they help develop the students&#x2019; capacity for empathy, as from the classroom they can discover the real situations facing people affected by social or environmental problems, such as the consequences of natural disasters, and the conditions in which people in different societies around the world live. ICTs also make it possible to observe the evolution of processes over time and space and in this way assess their scale, repercussions and future tendencies, so enabling the analysis of phenomena such as the expansion of our cities, deforestation or desertification. For all these reasons, they offer specific added value to geographical education and ESD, boosting motivation thanks to their innovative environment, which facilitates independent, meaningful learning in that they constitute an experience in themselves. In this way, these technologies can contribute, from the perspective of education and the different sciences, to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) on the sustainable development Agenda 2030. </p>
				<p>In Spain, since the enactment of the General Organization of the Education System Act (LOGSE) in 1992, Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) has been included in the curricular content across various educational levels, from Primary Education to Upper Secondary Education, generally associated with Geography. Subsequent educational laws have progressively increased the conceptual, procedural, and attitudinal content related to ESD. In the field of higher education, the same year saw the emergence of the first initiatives for curricular &#x2018;greening&#x2019; and promoting research on sustainable development, driven by the World Conference on Environment in Rio de Janeiro (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="ref-1-1204">Benayas, Marcen, Alba &amp; Guti&#xe9;rrez, 2017</xref>).</p>
			</sec>
			<sec id="sec-1.2-1204">
				<label>1.2.</label>
				<title>GITs and geographic education in Spain</title>
				<p>In Spain, the current Royal Decree 243/2022 (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="ref-45-1204">Real Decreto 243/2022</xref>), which established the minimum teaching contents for the Bachillerato (equivalent to Baccalaureate, or Key Stages 5 / Years 12&#x2013;13 in the UK, and Grades 11&#x2013;12 in other Anglophone countries), stated that geographic competencies are based on research-based learning of the natural and human phenomena that take place in the territory, in this way emphasizing how important the practical dimension is in the process of teaching and learning geography. Ecosocial processes are typically very complex, which means that to study and fully understand them we need applications that enable different forms of georeferenced information at any scale to be consulted and compared. It must also be possible to present research results with georeferenced data. Nowadays, in order to understand the functioning of the Earth&#x2019;s system and of the anthroposphere, we require tools with which to break down and relate the set of elements, processes and factors involved in all geographic events. This is why a holistic approach is so essential in geographic education, given that terrestrial subsystems interact with each other to reach a point of equilibrium in the global system (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="ref-25-1204">Kerski, 2008</xref>). The rapid advance of technology, and as a result of the methods of production and distribution, brings with it the need for a permanent updating of spatial data and of the instruments used to analyse it in both professional and educational walks of life. Faced with this scenario, Geographic Information Technologies (GIT) offer an ideal tool to help understand the context of our actions and their impact on natural systems. Unlike conventional cartography, through which one could find out where, GITs also make it easier to discover why. They enable us to interpret the territory from different scales and taking its different components into account with the support of spatial databases that are continually being expanded and updated. They also offer teachers and students the chance to locate, identify and analyse the processes that negatively affect the territory at a local, regional or global scale, so making it easier for them to understand the dynamics of problems that can originate and have consequences at each of these different scales (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="ref-9-1204">Crespo &amp; Rodr&#xed;guez, 2020</xref>).</p>
				<p>The incorporation of GITs into the formal contents of social science subjects is considerably more recent than the first research studies on their didactic potential at all educational levels, published in the last decades of the past century (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="ref-2-1204">Bosque, 1999</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="ref-3-1204">Buzai, 2001</xref>). In fact, in Spain, until the approval of the most recent Education Law (LOMLOE, in 2020) and the coming into force of the corresponding decrees in 2022, there had been no explicit references to the use of GITs. In the latest decrees governing the organization of Primary Education and the minimum teaching contents (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="ref-43-1204">Real Decreto 157/2022</xref>), GITs are included in the second and third cycles (from 7-8 to 11-12 years old), as part of the basic areas of knowledge in the subject area known as Knowledge of the Natural, Social and Cultural Environment. Within the block of contents on Societies and Territories, there is a section on the Challenges facing the world today. In Compulsory Secondary Education, these issues are covered in the syllabus for the combined subject of Geography and History in the same basic areas of knowledge as in Primary Education (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="ref-44-1204">Real Decreto 217/2022</xref>). Lastly, in Bachillerato (Baccalaureate or K-11 and K-12), geography is an optional subject, in which GITs are considered a basic resource for conducting individual and team-based investigations which enable an interdisciplinary approach to the territory to be implemented. They can also be used as a tool for diagnosis and for efficiently presenting and communicating conclusions and proposals aimed at improving the social environment of the students from the perspective of their critical analysis, so encouraging them to take part in civic activities and help them mature&#x201d; (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="ref-45-1204">Real Decreto 243/2022</xref>).</p>
				<p>Within GITs, Geographic Information Systems (GIS) have an excellent capacity to relate different layers of information, and can therefore act as a bridge between geospatial technology and teaching practices (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="ref-4-1204">Buzo-S&#xe1;nchez, 2021</xref>). Of these, the most widely used by teachers are the Web GIS and cartographic visualizers. This is because they adapt well to school settings (most of them are free and do not require specific software or hardware) and are easy to use (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="ref-14-1204">De Miguel, 2006</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="ref-8-1204">Crespo &amp; Rodr&#xed;guez, 2019</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="ref-7-1204">Crespo, 2019</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="ref-12-1204">De L&#xe1;zaro, Puertas-Aguilar, &#xc1;lvarez-Otero, 2022</xref>). Their application in the teaching of geography and other subjects contributes to the development of both digital skills (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="ref-37-1204">Palomero-Ylardia, Mellado-Moreno &amp; Bernal-Bravo, 2025</xref>) and critical spatial thought (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="ref-55-1204">Wisang Elang Fajar Nisnala, Purwanto, &amp; Syamsul Bachri, 2025</xref>). <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="ref-4-1204">Buzo-S&#xe1;nchez (2021)</xref> made clear that the integration of these tools in the teaching and learning process is ideal for implementing a methodology based on smart learning, in that it enhances independent, student-centred learning that is adapted to their needs. These systems contextualize knowledge and motivate learners by using a varied range of resources. They also develop their reasoning capacity (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="ref-5-1204">Buzo-S&#xe1;nchez; M&#xed;nguez &amp; De L&#xe1;zaro, 2023</xref>).</p>
			</sec>
			<sec id="sec-1.3-1204">
				<label>1.3.</label>
				<title>Story maps and their application in the field of sustainability</title>
				<p>A few years ago, a new communication product appeared based on the interaction between narrative and cartography. In this product, known as Story maps, maps are an integral part of the narration or explanation of a particular topic. In a strict sense, they could be defined as narrations in which information is supplied in such a way that the receiver receives it in an order that enables them to follow the plot of the story they are being told and understand its outcome or ending (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="ref-38-1204">Patton, 2014</xref>). Within the field of GIT, story maps are photographic or cartographic itineraries that enable the contents of &#x201c;stories&#x201d; to be visualized in the desired order so to make geographic information more accessible. Some digital cartography platforms offer tools for designing, creating and sharing resources of this kind. These include ArcGIS StoryMaps by ESRI, which has over 3 million examples. Their application in the classroom occurred almost immediately after they became available online, and they were used by teachers both as a motivating tool for the presentation of topics (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="ref-18-1204">Gonz&#xe1;lez &amp; Z&#xe1;pico, 2016</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="ref-39-1204">Pons, Armend&#xe1;riz &amp; Pintado, 2018</xref>), and as a platform for collaborative projects created together with or by the students (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="ref-11-1204">De L&#xe1;zaro &amp; Morales, 2021</xref>). Within the specific field of education for sustainability, they have been shown to be useful for illustrating and explaining the evolution of phenomena such as global warming, desertification and water shortages, so enabling teachers, among other things, to visually compare the situation in different places or at different times. In terms of methodology, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="ref-52-1204">Velilla, Guallart &amp; Laguna (2021)</xref> emphasize their value as educational resources for studying sustainability-related concepts, for example for the implementation of project-based learning proposals (in which story maps can act as very efficient tools for accessing information). They can also be used for collaborative learning in the sense that as they involve a &#x201c;journey&#x201d;, they can create a scenario that is equivalent to or can replace fieldwork and offers various different advantages.</p>
				<p>The use of story maps cannot replace the firsthand experience offered by fieldwork or the information provided by teaching materials or textbooks, but it can provide a means of visualizing the information, halfway between augmented reality and interactive learning that allows students to grasp environmental issues successfully (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="ref-6-1204">Cope, Mikhailova, Post, Schlautman &amp; Carbajales-Dale, 2018</xref>). In this sense, story maps offer an innovative visual means of connecting with students and arousing their interest in a particular topic. This is because they are presented in a similar communication format to those that young people are accustomed to using outside the classroom (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="ref-16-1204">Egiebor &amp; Foster, 2019</xref>). Students can use them in very different ways, for example &#x201c;as a presentation tool, a tool for practicing web mapping and data skills, as a way to acquire new experience and skills in an engaging way&#x201d; (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="ref-54-1204">Vojtekov&#xe1;, &#x17d;oncov&#xe1;, Tirp&#xe1;kov&#xe1; &amp; Vojtek, 2022</xref>). For their part teachers can use them among other things, as &#x201c;an evaluation tool, a tool to attract students&#x2019; attention or as a didactic resource for teaching GITs in primary and secondary schools&#x201d;, as required by the curriculum, in a simple accessible way. As <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="ref-54-1204">Vojtekov&#xe1; <italic>et al.</italic>
					</xref> (ib.) made clear, &#x201c;there is a critical need for digital narration as a way of teaching and learning in education in the 21st century&#x201d;. Story maps can respond to this recent growing need, in that they are didactic tools that adapt well to current communication strategies, enhance interactivity between students and boost their interest in the contents and their motivation. Within the field of ESD, they are of enormous interest as a work tool which will be reinforced in coming years with the development of GeoAI tools. Their multiple applications as a didactic resource, as we will later go on to see, demonstrate their great potential for teachers. In spite of this, however, they are only used very rarely in the teaching of geography and other associated sciences. This is why it is considered fundamental to promote the use and diffusion of story maps in initial teacher training programmes, so reinforcing the increasingly evident role that GITs can play in the digital literacy of teachers and students within the current framework, something that is generally considered to be essential for effective ESD.</p>
				<p>Given that GITs have only recently been incorporated into geography teaching in general and ESD in particular, very little research has been done on them (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="ref-40-1204">Pons, 2023</xref>). This paper offers a review of the publications which share experiences and proposals regarding their application in the field of geographic education with an ecosocial approach. To this end, we analyse the methodological approach applied in each paper, the audience it is aimed at, and the ESD-related topics it addresses. With this in mind, the following objectives were established for this review:</p>

						<p>O1- Compile and analyse the different publications and initiatives about the use of story maps in ESD from the field of geography;</p>
					</list-item>
					<list-item>
						<p>O2- Identify and describe recent tendencies in relation to the didactic use of story maps in ESD.</p>
					</list-item>
				</list>
				<p>In order to achieve these objectives, the following research questions were identified:</p>

						<p>RQ1: In the main academic search engines, how many initiatives and studies are there about the use of story maps in ESD in geographic education?</p>
					</list-item>
					<list-item>
						<p>RQ2: In what contexts were these studies conducted and which issues did they touch on? Who were they aimed at?</p>
					</list-item>
					<list-item>
						<p>RQ3: What are the current trends in the application of story maps in EDS?</p>
					</list-item>
					<list-item>
						<p>RQ4: What does the academic literature about story maps reveal about the future of GITs in the field of ESD?</p>
					</list-item>
				</list>
			</sec>
		</sec>
		<sec id="sec-2-1204" sec-type="methods">
			<label>2.</label>
			<title>Methodology</title>
			<p>As mentioned earlier, the current interest in story maps is a relatively recent phenomenon. As a result, the scientific literature on this question is still not sufficiently extensive and consolidated to be able to explore in depth all the possibilities that it offers in the specific field of ESD. With this in mind, in the design of this study, it was decided that it was important to identify the available publications about ESD and story maps that were related with both questions with a view to making a rigorous analysis of research tendencies, as set out in the objectives of this investigation. To this end, we conducted a search for academic articles and initiatives about story maps that had some relationship with ESD in the main databases of scientific publications in Spanish and English. The articles thrown up by the search were then filtered manually one by one. This enabled us on the one hand to identify recent tendencies in relation to the didactic use of story maps in the field of ESD and secondly to reflect on the challenges facing this line of research in the future and the possibilities it offers.</p>
			<p>The process of selection of the relevant publications was conducted in January-February 2024 and involved the following four steps:</p>
			<list list-type="alpha-lower" id="lst-3-1204">
				<list-item>
					<p>Four leading academic databases were selected for our search for the relevant literature: Scopus, WoS, Google Scholar and Dialnet. Scopus and WoS were chosen because they &#x201c;have positioned themselves at an international level as the most widely recognized, most prestigious databases for Social Sciences journals&#x201d; (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="ref-19-1204">Gonz&#xe1;lez-Pardo, Repiso &amp; Arroyabe-Cabrera, 2020</xref>), which means that their use should be standard practice in any bibliographical research. Google Scholar was selected, in line with the guidelines laid down by earlier research on this question (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="ref-41-1204">Prieto Andreu &amp; &#xc1;lvarez-Kurogi, 2021</xref>), as a reference for obtaining articles with significant diffusion but less impact, and communications presented at conferences. Lastly, Dialnet was selected as the reference database for Ibero-American literature, as &#x201c;the most complete, most widely disseminated open-source scientific bibliography in Spanish&#x201d; (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="ref-29-1204">Mateo, 2015</xref>).</p>

					<p>In order to narrow the search, we established a number of inclusion, duplicity and exclusion criteria. These were applied to Boolean search chains in Spanish and in English based on the following keywords: story map, geography, education, sustainability, ESD and ecosocial<xref ref-type="fn" rid="fn-5-1204">
							<sup>5</sup>
						</xref>. In our searches with these parameters, a total of 913 initial results were obtained: 19 in Scopus, 57 in WoS, 830 in Google Scholar and 7 in Dialnet. The raw results were obtained from search chains that combined the first two keywords with at least one of the last four.</p>
				</list-item>
				<list-item>
					<p>The inclusion and exclusion criteria proposed for filtering the original sample were decided on the basis, firstly, of the achievement of the objectives regarding the identification of the main proposals and the possibilities for using story maps in ESD and secondly, from a practical standpoint, looking for a reasonable balance between the quantity and representativeness of the different approaches to using story maps. The filtering work was conducted manually, by reviewing the title and contents of the articles in an attempt to identify both the articles that were repeated on different search platforms (presumably those with greater scientific impact) and those that were related with the objectives of the study. During this process we found that most of the articles did not explore the didactic or pedagogical aspects of story maps in depth and instead focused on their function as a visualization tool for outreach purposes.</p>

					<p>From this initial selection of articles, we selected a final sample group of 16 paradigmatic articles on different initiatives on the use of story maps in the field of geographic education that were related to ESD. This sample group was selected after an exhaustive analysis of the content in order to be able to reflect in depth on the most recent tendencies in the didactic application of story maps in the field of sustainability, with special attention to geographical education. A list of the selected articles can be consulted in Appendix A. In this research, we decided not to carry out a systematized analysis of the literature on this issue according to the PRISMA model. This is because similar experiences in the field of story maps (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="ref-40-1204">Pons, 2023</xref>) led us to conclude that an excessively systematized analysis might result in the omission of certain innovative proposals published outside academic contexts. It is important to remember that the boom in the literature on story maps did not begin until 2018 (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="ref-6-1204">Cope, Mikhailova, Post &amp; Schlautman, 2018</xref>), which means that many of the most innovative initiatives are extremely recent. In addition, many recently published story maps of interest in the field of sustainability fall outside the scope of purely scientific literature. For this reason, the results derived from the analyzed literature have been validated not by reviewing additional literature, but by identifying concrete examples that illustrate the different types of trends identified, as will be shown below.</p>

		<sec id="sec-3-1204" sec-type="results">
			<label>3.</label>
			<title>Results</title>
			<p>From our analysis of the applications of story maps in the field of geographic education aimed at sustainability, we obtained results relating to the approach followed and their methodological application within the educational framework. Results were also obtained regarding the people to whom these proposals were addressed, the issues they explored and possible applications of story maps.</p>
			<sec id="sec-3.1-1204">
				<label>3.1.</label>
				<title>Approach and methodology</title>
				<p>On the basis of the innovative experiences and the design and objectives of the articles analysed, we identified four strategies for the didactic use of story maps in the field of education for sustainable development. Taking as a reference the most visualized maps in the ArcGIS Story maps community (<ext-link ext-link-type="uri" xlink:href="https://doc.arcgis.com/en/arcgis-storymaps/gallery/" id="exl-1-1204">https://doc.arcgis.com/en/arcgis-storymaps/gallery/</ext-link>) and other widely disseminated story maps &#x2013;a list of the selected story maps referenced in the selected studies can be consulted in the last row of Appendix A&#x2013;, we will now illustrate their main uses and approaches today, considering their users &#x2013; students or teachers &#x2013; and the ways in which they are used, which allows for the differentiation of four main usage types:</p>
				<list list-type="bullet" id="lst-4-1204">
					<list-item>
						<p>Story maps for displaying contents related with sustainable development, which enable geographic phenomena to be displayed in virtual didactic itineraries. These could be very useful to teachers as a means of illustrating aspects that the students are unable to discern in their immediate environment. They are good tools for effectively organizing and presenting sustainability-related contents. One example is the story map on climate change created by <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="ref-53-1204">Velilla, Guallart and Mar&#xed;n-Yaseli (2022)</xref>, one of the most widely used resources in Spain<xref ref-type="fn" rid="fn-6-1204">
								<sup>6</sup>
							</xref> in secondary education for sustainable development (<ext-link ext-link-type="uri" xlink:href="https://storymaps.arcgis.com/stories/5b724a1f0a034c54a225a9fc9961f4f8" id="exl-2-1204">https://storymaps.arcgis.com/stories/5b724a1f0a034c54a225a9fc9961f4f8</ext-link>). At further education level, in the field of tourism, researchers from the Department of Anthropology of the University of Maryland have used them to show both students and the public in general the ecological footprint left by heritage tourism (<ext-link ext-link-type="uri" xlink:href="https://www.heritageofclimate.com/" id="exl-3-1204">https://www.heritageofclimate.com/</ext-link>).</p>
					</list-item>
					<list-item>
						<p>Story maps as teaching material for independent learning by students: they enable the information to be presented in a format that is easy to use, flexible and interactive, which can also be consulted during the course of research work, projects or fieldwork. The story map on education for sustainability created by <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="ref-12-1204">De L&#xe1;zaro, Puertas and Otero (2022)</xref> contains various proposals that are excellent examples of didactic resources used as reference material for trainee teachers (<ext-link ext-link-type="uri" xlink:href="https://storymaps.arcgis.com/stories/78d656fd7c6c43f48bcb26a7c7225aa4" id="exl-4-1204">https://storymaps.arcgis.com/stories/78d656fd7c6c43f48bcb26a7c7225aa4</ext-link>). In order to analyse the issues affecting &#x201c;Emptied Spain&#x201d; (rural areas in which the population has fallen drastically), the story map created as part of the GEOVACUI project (Mart&#xed;n-Vide, Mart&#xed;nez- Arn&#xe1;iz, M&#xed;nguez, Ojeda-Z&#xfa;jar &amp; Ruiz-Sinoga, 2019) is an example of easily accessible material that efficiently conveys the necessary information about this particular phenomenon to independent learners (<ext-link ext-link-type="uri" xlink:href="http://www.ucm.es/geovacui/storymap)" id="exl-5-1204">https://www.ucm.es/geovacui/storymap).</ext-link>
						</p>
					</list-item>
					<list-item>
						<p>Story maps as a tool for teacher-student interaction: the possibility of creating story maps in a collaborative way or of using them as Augmented Reality tools allows teachers to use them to assess their students or interact with them. Story maps can be used for instance as tools for co-assessment or as an instrument for active participation during fieldwork. <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="ref-32-1204">M&#xed;nguez (2021)</xref>, for example, experimented with the use of story maps to design collaborative tourist routes within the framework of University Degrees in Tourism. Within the field of education for sustainability, creating collaborative story maps of aspects that the students could identify in their immediate surrounding area would be of particular interest (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="ref-28-1204">Mateo &amp; Rodr&#xed;guez, 2023</xref>).</p>
					</list-item>
					<list-item>
						<p>Story maps as a project: this approach could be of interest in project-based learning proposals. With some prior training (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="ref-30-1204">Mart&#xed;nez-Hern&#xe1;ndez, Yubero, Ferreiro-Calzada &amp; Mendoza-de Miguel, 2021</xref>), the students could design story maps independently as an individual project or in groups. This could help them develop both digital and spatial skills. <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="ref-46-1204">Rodr&#xed;guez, Vilar &amp; Garc&#xed;a (2023)</xref> reflect on the possibility of students making story maps <italic>in situ</italic> during fieldtrips. <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="ref-31-1204">Min Park (2021)</xref> goes one step further, proposing that students could make story maps as part of educational projects that require them to collect data in the field with the aid of GPS devices. To help them create the story maps, the students are offered a series of guide questions as a reference through which they can learn contents while carrying out the project.</p>

			</sec>
			<sec id="sec-3.2-1204">
				<label>3.2.</label>
				<title>Intended audience and common topics</title>
				<p>The articles analysed highlight the value of story maps at different levels and spheres of education for teaching and learning about sustainability-related issues (<xref ref-type="fig" rid="fig-1-1204">Fig. 1</xref>). Although they are used above all in further education, their use in secondary schools is becoming increasingly common, as evidenced by the growing number of publications related to this educational stage in the past three years (see references in articles in <xref ref-type="app" rid="app-1-1204">Appendix A</xref>). They are also of increasing interest in the dissemination and communication of science to society in general.</p>

				<p>As regards the sustainability-related topics that can be explored with story maps, the evidence shows that they are very versatile tools. In the research studies used as a reference (see Appendix A), story maps are presented as ideal resources for in-depth analysis of environmental problems and natural risks of different kinds (<xref ref-type="fig" rid="fig-2-1204">Fig. 2</xref>), and can be used to illustrate problems as diverse as climate change (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="ref-49-1204">Schnitzler, 2020</xref>; Morales &amp; De L&#xe1;zaro, 2021; De L&#xe1;zaro &amp; Morales, 2023), rural depopulation (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="ref-52-1204">Velilla, Guallart &amp; Mar&#xed;n- Yaseli, 2021</xref>) or the sustainability of our cities (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="ref-28-1204">Mateo &amp; Rodr&#xed;guez, 2023</xref>).</p>

				<p>In addition to these topics, during our review of the story maps held in reference repositories, we became aware of the possibilities they offer for the study, from a geographical perspective, of other aspects relating to sustainability such as sustainable mobility, green urban infrastructure or sustainable architecture<xref ref-type="fn" rid="fn-7-1204">
						<sup>7</sup>
					</xref>.</p>
			</sec>
		</sec>
		<sec id="sec-4-1204" sec-type="discussion">
			<label>4.</label>
			<title>Discussion</title>
			<p>We will now go on to look at the possible future trends in research into story maps and their application in ESD revealed in our review. We will also reflect on possible measures and actions that could be taken to encourage their use in education in general and in ESD in particular.</p>
			<sec id="sec-4.1-1204">
				<label>4.1.</label>
				<title>Interpretation of the results</title>
				<p>Considering the variety of didactic proposals based on story maps reviewed and the sample of selected paradigmatic publications, it can be concluded that there has been a recent increase in the publication of articles presenting proposals for the use of story maps in geographic education aimed at ESD. This increase is in line with the increasing production of these resources in other fields (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="ref-24-1204">Jacobson, 2022</xref>). The diversity of ESD-related contents in the publications we analysed confirms that story maps are a versatile tool for presenting different geographic contents related with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDG), so highlighting with the works reviewed that there are some fields that remain almost unexplored, such as education for Peace (SDG 16) or for Sustainable Industrialization (SDG 9).</p>
				<p>The research studies and cases analysed here highlight that the promotion and didactic use of story maps for ESD necessarily involves the &#x201c;sustainabilization&#x201d; of all curriculum contents. This means that rather than adding new specific contents about sustainability or expanding existing ones, it should be allowed to permeate all aspects of the curriculum. With this in mind, contents relating to sustainability must be made more accessible so as to encourage the widespread creation of story maps and promote their use in the classroom. This could lead to them acquiring a more important future role both in classrooms at all educational levels and in the training of teaching staff. This could have a beneficial reciprocal effect in that the extended use of story maps could make a significant contribution to enhancing the sustainabilization of the curriculum, as made clear by <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="ref-13-1204">De L&#xe1;zaro-Torres, Puertas-Aguilar &amp; &#xc1;lvarez-Otero (2023)</xref>, who presented some specific examples of its potential as a teaching resource for this purpose (<ext-link ext-link-type="uri" xlink:href="https://storymaps.arcgis.com/stories/b97a0b3c5b81409aab01a055108faf5a" id="exl-6-1204">https://storymaps.arcgis.com/stories/b97a0b3c5b81409aab01a055108faf5a</ext-link>).</p>
				<p>It is also possible that the methodological transformation in which geography as a discipline is currently immersed, with the boom in GITs and the progressive introduction of sustainable development in the didactics of this subject at all educational levels, will bring new ways of promoting sustainability from a geographical perspective using the new tools that have emerged and presumably will continue to emerge in the future. In this context, story maps as we know them today are a tool or resource that is undergoing development, which will later be strengthened and optimized with the appearance and development of other new tools such as Geographic Artificial Intelligence (GeoAI) or Augmented Geographic Reality (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="ref-46-1204">Rodr&#xed;guez, Vilar &amp; Garc&#xed;a, 2023</xref>).</p>
			</sec>
			<sec id="sec-4.2-1204">
				<label>4.2.</label>
				<title>Reflections on our results</title>
				<p>In spite of the possibilities offered by GITs in general and story maps in particular within the framework of ESD, it is necessary for their everyday use to become established in the collective imaginary of the teaching staff, so as to promote and generalize their use. In our case in Spain, this will not be easy. Academic Geography is confined to very specific university degrees, and in compulsory education&#x2014;where Geography enjoys a significant role&#x2014;this subject is taught by teachers who graduated in Primary Education or History &#x2014;rarely in Geography&#x2014; (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="ref-27-1204">Marco, 2002</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="ref-10-1204">Crespo, Sebasti&#xe1; &amp; Souto, 2021</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="ref-26-1204">L&#xf3;pez, 2022</xref>), who are unlikely to have used GITs during their own education or training process. It is therefore important to reflect on what measures and actions could be taken to enhance the use of story maps in ESD:</p>
				<list list-type="bullet" id="lst-5-1204">
					<list-item>
						<p>
							<italic>Promote the use of</italic> story maps <italic>in the Degree courses studied by future geography teachers</italic>: In the field of teacher training there is significant room for improvement as regards the role that GITs can play in the training of future teachers at primary, secondary and further education level (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="ref-15-1204">De Miguel, Gracia &amp; Kratochvil, 2024</xref>). In this regard, it would be a good idea to reflect on the important benefits that could be gained from creating specific compulsory subjects that help enhance the dissemination and implementation of GITs. These could be included in teacher training programs in general and in the specific programmes for specialist geography teachers<xref ref-type="fn" rid="fn-8-1204">
								<sup>8</sup>
							</xref>. Their limited presence in the current curriculum, confined &#x2014;at least in Spain&#x2014; exclusively to geography does not reflect their significant potential as a cross-disciplinary didactic resource. Story maps could be an exceptionally accessible and interesting didactic resource for introducing future teachers to GITs, with a view to normalizing their use in their future careers as teachers.</p>
					</list-item>
					<list-item>
						<p>
							<italic>Develop new</italic> story maps <italic>for ESD</italic>: as indicated, the development of story maps for ESD has greatly increased in recent years. However, a resource of this kind which provides an image of a phenomenon at a specific moment in time can easily become outdated. It is therefore essential to keep generating a constant flow of story maps focused on the teaching of sustainability.</p>
					</list-item>
					<list-item>
						<p>
							<italic>Explore the didactic possibilities of</italic> story maps <italic>in other teaching forms and settings</italic>: story maps offer an exceptional resource for promoting innovation in teaching methods, especially in unconventional teaching settings. In the particular case of ESD, the strategies for creating collaborative story maps or story maps with data gathered during an educational fieldtrip could make it easier for students to understand specific environmental problems, and would also promote reflection and stimulate collaborative and meaningful learning (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="ref-46-1204">Rodr&#xed;guez, Vilar &amp; Garc&#xed;a, 2023</xref>).</p>
					</list-item>
				</list>
			</sec>
			<sec id="sec-4.3-1204">
				<label>4.3.</label>
				<title>Limitations of this study</title>
				<p>The limitations of this research are the result, first and foremost, of the databases we consulted and of the fact that we made the search in Spanish and English. This means that publications in other languages were excluded from our selection, as were those mentioned in other databases that we did not consult. The second limitation arises from the particular keywords and combinations we used in our search. It is possible that some articles with some relation with our subject were published using other concepts and/or keywords. Thirdly, the very limited number of review papers on the subject under investigation prevented us from comparing our results as extensively as we would have wished. However, our findings largely align with those presented in a similar recent study (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="ref-40-1204">Pons, 2023</xref>), particularly regarding the growing interest in story maps related to environmental issues and the case study approach to working with the tool. The last limitation is the relatively small size of the selected sample group, which could lead to distorted results in relation to the intended audience and the ESD topics being studied, such that in the near future different tendencies might be detected to those initially identified. Despite these limitations, it is important to stress that the selected sample group successfully fulfilled our objective of identifying and defining the recent tendencies in relation to the didactic use of story maps in ESD, as it enabled us to identify the most common uses and most significant tendencies.</p>
			</sec>
		</sec>
		<sec id="sec-5-1204" sec-type="conclusions">
			<label>5.</label>
			<title>Conclusions</title>
			<p>The bibliography analysed in this review show that suitability of GITs for understanding the impacts triggered by human actions on the socio-ecological environment. Story maps, as narrative projects with a cartographic base into which multimedia products can be incorporated, are an excellent example. The review presented here highlights a growing production of story maps applied to a wide range of topics and developed from diverse methodological approaches. This increase is also evident in geographic education, in which ESD-related contents are some of the most frequent. The selected research studies offer results that demonstrate the validity of story maps and their enormous didactic potential either as resources designed by or for teachers or as group projects. They can even be used as assessment tools. In the same way, they can be aimed at different target audiences, from primary and secondary education to university students, researchers, professionals, and the public in general. Trainee primary and secondary school teachers are frequent targets. This is an important finding given that in addition to the need to develop teachers&#x2019; digital skills, as mentioned earlier, it is also crucial to develop their sensitivity and critical attitudes towards the socioenvironmental challenges facing the world today.</p>
			<p>Sustainability must play an increasingly important role in school curriculums and in particular in the study of Geography. This will almost certainly lead to an increasingly frequent use of GITs to analyse the causes and consequences of ecosocial problems. As a result, further research will be required in the future, which like this study, must analyse the role of these tools so as to find out more about how they can best contribute to achieving the necessary ESD, both from the specific perspective of geography and from that of other subjects.</p>
