				<title>Abstract</title>
				<p>The digital future of sustainable spatial development is smoothly functioning and functioning ICT systems using GIS (Geographical Information Systems) tools. Teaching students to use GIS tools is reflected in the choice of tools for visualization of results in thematic studies, which is the diploma thesis. The aim of this research is analyze the current use of GIS tools in the development of diploma theses (engineering and master&#x2019;s) in the field of spatial management at the selected university. Among the methods, the historical-interpretive method based on the analysis of publications in the area of GIS and the method of deduction through the analysis of visualization studies used by students in their diploma theses were used. The study indicates that the use of GIS the software are not the only ones used by Polish students to visualize their research results. Despite the extensive capabilities and great potential of GIS tools, only a fraction of students choose to present their results on maps using this software. Future research should focus on motivating students to become more involved in thematic research using GIS the software.</p>

				<title>Resumen</title>
				<p>El futuro digital del desarrollo territorial sostenible se sustenta en sistemas TIC integrados que operan de manera eficiente mediante herramientas SIG. La formaci&#xf3;n de los estudiantes en el uso de estas tecnolog&#xed;as se refleja en la selecci&#xf3;n de herramientas de visualizaci&#xf3;n empleadas en sus Trabajos Fin de Grado (TFG). Esta investigaci&#xf3;n tiene como objetivo analizar el uso actual de herramientas SIG en los TFG de ingenier&#xed;a y maestr&#xed;a, dentro del &#xe1;mbito de la gesti&#xf3;n espacial en una universidad espec&#xed;fica. Para ello, se aplicaron dos enfoques metodol&#xf3;gicos: el hist&#xf3;rico-interpretativo, basado en el an&#xe1;lisis de publicaciones especializadas en SIG, y el deductivo, centrado en el estudio de las visualizaciones utilizadas por los estudiantes en sus trabajos. El estudio indica que el uso del software SIG no es el &#xfa;nico utilizado por los estudiantes polacos para visualizar los resultados de sus investigaciones. A pesar de las amplias capacidades y el gran potencial de las herramientas SIG, solo una peque&#xf1;a parte de los estudiantes opta por presentar sus resultados en mapas utilizando este software. Las investigaciones futuras deber&#xed;an centrarse en motivar a los estudiantes para que se involucren m&#xe1;s en la investigaci&#xf3;n tem&#xe1;tica utilizando el software SIG.</p>

			<label>1.</label>
			<title>Introduction</title>
			<p>Since the middle of the 20th century, we can observe the creation of a new type of society commonly referred to as the Information Society. The rapid expansion of information and communication technology, access and flow of information on a large scale makes information one of the more valued goods. </p>
			<p>A society becomes an information society when it reaches a stage of development and the scale and complexity of social, economic processes requiring the use of new techniques for collecting, processing, transmitting and using the huge amount of information generated by these processes. The information society is a new type of society taking shape in countries with a high degree of technological development.</p>
			<p>The Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="ref-8-1215">OECD, 1998</xref>) has recognized that the economy of tomorrow will largely be an, &#x201c;information economy,&#x201d; and that society will increasingly be an , &#x201c;information society. This means that information will form the basis of the &#x201c;knowledge economy&#x201d;. This concept defines an economy as one, &#x201c;in which knowledge (codified and tacit) is effectively created, acquired, transferred and used by institutions, organizations, individuals and local communities, in order to increase the degree of economic and social development&#x201d; (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="ref-8-1215">OECD, 1998</xref>). This requires such an organization of the economy and institutional infrastructure that will stimulate the effective use of existing knowledge in the process of creating new knowledge, eliminating obsolete activities and starting new more effective ones, including the adjustment of education in this regard. One of the key players in the field of education is higher education institutions, which are intended to create conditions for the acquisition of knowledge and skills needed to solve problems using new methods and techniques derived from information technology. The development of modern technologies and progressive digitization in every aspect of social, economic life requires the implementation of new tools and new techniques including the use of digital, geographic information and presenting it in graphic form using GIS tools.</p>
			<p>Motivation to undertake research is the digital future of sustainable spatial development is smoothly functioning and functioning ICT systems using GIS tools. Teaching students to use GIS tools is reflected in the choice of tools for visualization of results in thematic studies, which is the diploma thesis (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="ref-9-1215">Panecki, 2021</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="ref-7-1215">Kozak et al., 2023</xref>).</p>
			<p>The aim of the research is to analyze the current use of GIS tools in the development of diploma theses (engineering and master&#x2019;s) in the field of spatial management at the selected university.</p>
			<p>The following were used to achieve the research objective among the methods, the historical-interpretive method based on the analysis of publications in the area of GIS and the method of deduction through the analysis of visualization studies used by students in their diploma theses were used (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="ref-9-1215">Panecki, 2021</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="ref-7-1215">Kozak et al., 2023</xref>). The following research questions were formulated to realize the aim of:</p>

					<p>What the software are most often used by graduate students in writing their diploma theses?</p>
				</list-item>
				<list-item>
					<p>How is the subject area most often covered in diploma theses?</p>
				</list-item>
				<list-item>
					<p>Are GIS tools the only ones used to present results in diploma theses?</p>
				</list-item>
				<list-item>
					<p>How has the use of GIS tools changed over the years?</p>
				</list-item>
			</list>
					<p>The structure of the article is linked deductively, so that the final research conclusions follow from the theoretical issues introduced previously. </p>
		</sec>
		<sec id="sec-2-1215">
			<label>2.</label>
			<title>Literature review</title>
			<p>Since the half of the 20th century, there has been intensive research in data collection and the tool that could process this data (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="ref-4-1215">Ceccato and Snickars 2000</xref>). With advances in technology, particularly the development of computer technology, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="ref-11-1215">Scholten and Stillwell (1990</xref>) pointed out that future technologies have unlimited possibilities for development and are a potential that can be used to support solutions to planning issues.</p>
			<p>In the field of GIS identification, many definitions are given, but none of them has gained common acceptance. According to <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="ref-5-1215">Gajewski (2016</xref>) a geographic information system is called a system for acquiring, processing verifying, integrating, manipulating, analyzing and presenting data that is spatially referenced to the Earth. A GIS is usually comprised of a spatial database and appropriate software, which enables the development of applications available online and the use of interactive maps (web GIS) (Pokojska et al., 2021). Finding spatial relationships between the various elements of the geographic environment and understanding the key relationships that occur between them is key to creating thematic maps, which make it easier to analyze the phenomena taking place and interpret the results (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="ref-3-1215">Burrough, 1986</xref>). In polish education, the foundations of current GIS were shaped by cartography, topography and remote sensing. The first lectures and exercises in cartography and topography were introduced more than 120 years ago, in which the implementation was closely linked to field practice. Remote sensing was previously referred to as photo interpretation and was introduced into the geography curriculum in the second half of the 1960s. </p>
			<p>These subjects formed the foundation for the creation and development of the foundations of GIS on the basis of applied methods of data acquisition, processing and interpretation of phenomena and processes occurring in space in the discipline of geography. These include: map overlay method, as well as object classification methods, which today have become part of the canon of GIS and remote sensing procedures. Thus, Geographic Information Systems as educational subjects did not appear in a vacuum (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="ref-15-1215">Widacki, 2004</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="ref-12-1215">Szczepanek, 2013</xref>).</p>
			<p>Technological developments have stimulated the collection, processing and modification of a range of data. Specialized systems began to be developed, which allows the collection, organization, analysis and visualization of digital data, including spatial data. The development of GIS began with the recording of a range of data and the ability to visualize it. The next stage included the first computer software, including tools with which spatial information processing could be done. Currently, we are in the phase of development of Internet technologies, in which the emergence and development of applications available on line that allow the use of interactive maps (web GIS) (Pokojska et al., 2021).</p>
			<p>Intensive development (web GIS) allows visualization of statistical, social and economic data in the form of thematic maps (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="ref-19-1215">Zysk and Zalewska,2024 a</xref>). Combining data from different sources and, above all, finding spatial relationships between spatial policy (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="ref-18-1215">Zysk and &#x179;robek-R&#xf3;&#x17c;a&#x144;ska., 2016</xref>), its functions (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="ref-22-1215">&#x179;robek-R&#xf3;&#x17c;a&#x144;ska et al., 2016</xref>) , and spatial changes (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="ref-13-1215">Tataruch et al., 2019</xref>), social problems (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="ref-20-1215">Zysk and Zalewska, 2024 b</xref>) including different elements of the geographic environment is increasingly a tool used by graduate students to develop research results as part of their diploma thesis. In accordance with the law (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="ref-1-1215">Act, 2024</xref>) a diploma thesis is an independent study of a scientific, artistic or practical issue or a technical or artistic achievement, demonstrating the student&#x2019;s general knowledge and skills related to studies in a particular field, level and profile, as well as the ability to analyze and make conclusions independently. The diploma thesis is in the form of a written study, and is a report on the activities carried out by its author of a purely theoretical nature, or may include a description of the experiments performed.</p>
			<p>Accordingly, detailed analysis is given to the theses that were defended in the field of study of spatial management in the period from 2011 to 2024, which were written under the supervision of the supervisor, who is the author of the article.</p>
		</sec>
		<sec id="sec-3-1215" sec-type="methods">
			<label>3.</label>
			<title>Sources and methodology</title>
			<sec id="sec-3.1-1215">
				<label>3.1.</label>
				<title>Materials and methodology</title>
				<p>The object of the research in this article is the city of Olsztyn in which the University of Warmia and Mazury in Olsztyn (UWM) is located, which educates students in 17 faculties, including the Department of Geosciences. One of the faculties within the minimum curriculum are subjects related to the use of GIS. Such a specialty is the direction - spatial management.</p>
				<p>More than 100 diploma theses (engineering and master&#x2019;s) defended in the period from 2011 to 2024 at the Faculty of Geoengineering, majoring in spatial management, were analyzed for the study. </p>
				<p>Various methods and techniques were used to achieve the goal of the study, as the complexity of the problems described required a holistic approach. A mixed method was used to achieve the research objective, as the complexity of the issues described required a holistic approach. In the first stage, a historical-interpretative method was used to describe recognized publications from recent decades on the subject of GIS in this field. </p>
				<p>As one of the frameworks used in mixed methodology is case study, this method was also applied. The case study framework allows for an in-depth analysis of specific cases or phenomena, combining multiple methods to ensure a comprehensive understanding of the research objective in a specific context. This framework is particularly useful when researchers want to examine a unique or rare case in detail. In the final phase, deductive analysis was used to verify the relevance of the thesis topic and the use of GIS tools in its development.</p>
				<p>The stages of the research were presented according to the scheme shown in <xref ref-type="fig" rid="fig-1-1215">Figure 1</xref>.</p>

			<title>Results</title>

				<label>4.1.</label>
				<title>Survey of subjects undertaken in engineering and master&#x2019;s theses in the field of spatial management.</title>
				<p>The study began by identifying the themes undertaken by graduate students in their diploma theses. Accordingly, a classification was made into the following research areas: topics related to the social area, the economic area and the spatial area. The area of social subject matter dominated in the analyzed works pond 60% followed by the spatial area 30% and the last place was taken by works in the economic area 10% (<xref ref-type="fig" rid="fig-2-1215">Figure 2</xref>). In view of the fact that the implementation of diploma topics is carried out at the Faculty of Geoengineering, taking up a topic from the spatial area is clear, while it is surprising and pond 60% of the diploma theses are works covering social topics. Students at consultations and in direct conversations themselves indicate that social problems and social phenomena are closer to them than economic issues, hence this choice. </p>

				<p>The vast majority of more than 60% of diploma theses were review papers. Conceptual diploma theses accounted for 30%, and research theses for 10%. The topics of diploma theses focused on the following key phrases: objects (<xref ref-type="fig" rid="fig-3-1215">Figure 3</xref>) thematic (<xref ref-type="fig" rid="fig-4-1215">Figure 4</xref>), actors ( <xref ref-type="fig" rid="fig-5-1215">Figure 5</xref>).</p>

				<p>For research purposes, it was also verified how the use of computer software applied to the thesis has evolved over the past ten years. </p>
				<p>The following software were taken for analysis: Excel, Statystica, ArcGIS, Paint, SketchUp and without the software. Until 2020, the majority of the diploma thesis was prepared on the basis of theoretical considerations without the use of software, and if software were applied it was Excel. Other software were used symbolically (<xref ref-type="fig" rid="fig-6-1215">Figure 6</xref>).</p>

				<p>In the period from 2020 to 2024, the use of modern technologies and the software used has changed dramatically (<xref ref-type="fig" rid="fig-7-1215">Figure 7</xref>). The number of theses without using a software has decreased, while there has been an increase in the use of Excel and ArcGIS, QGIS software. This may be related to the change in the curriculum and the introduction of subjects in which classes are implemented using GIS tools.</p>

				<label>4.2.</label>
				<title>Examples of thematic visualization with the software used</title>
				<p>The analysis of the diploma theses showed that the use of computer software to present research results in diploma theses is gradually increasing from year to year. In the vast majority, 80% of diploma students, as a research tool chose- a survey questionnaire. For detailed analysis, they used Excel and occasionally Statystica. Below are examples of the visualizations used in the theses from 2020 to 2024. Visualization in AutoCAD software to identify public spaces (<xref ref-type="fig" rid="fig-8-1215">Figure 8</xref>).</p>

				<p>In the aim of designing a space that met the criteria for female-friendliness, the students used SketchUp software (<xref ref-type="fig" rid="fig-9-1215">Figure 9</xref>).</p>

				<p>Visualization, which was aimed at presenting the negative phenomena occurring in the urban public space, such as the identification of nuisance objects, students used ArcGIS software (<xref ref-type="fig" rid="fig-10-1215">Figure 10</xref>).</p>

				<p>In their diploma theses, students also used GIS tools to develop thematic maps, for example, to identify the friendliness of public spaces for seniors between the ages of 60 and 74 (<xref ref-type="fig" rid="fig-11-1215">Figure 11</xref>).</p>

				<p>The analysis results show that students use a number of software to develop their thesis results. The usual software are: Excel ,Statystica, ArcGIS, Paint, SketchUp and without a software. The area addressed in the thesis is more than 90% urban areas and the vast majority of the topics urban public space, smart city and functional and spatial changes. The survey shows that GIS tools are not one software used for visualization. Other software include: AutoCAD, SketchUp, Paint. On the other hand, the use of software has been changing over the past few years, and one can observe an increase in the interest of graduate students in GIS tools for graphical studies in their diploma theses. Just a few years earlier, this tool was less frequently used, while in recent years it has been increasingly used to present the results of the research carried out. The most popular pogram in terms of GIS tools are ArcGIS and QGIS.</p>
				<p>The availability of new technological tools in the field of visualization is increasing the use of these tools by students for graphic studies in the diploma thesis. </p>
				<p>It should be noted that not every thesis requires the application of this type of development of the use of such tools. In face-to-face interviews, students indicated that they like to make all kinds of maps, cartographic studies or visualizations, because they can see the result of their work and it will give them satisfaction.</p>

			<label>5.</label>
			<title>Conclusions</title>
			<p>Geographic Information Systems are a collection of computer tools that allow data collection, management, analysis and visualization of data of spatial phenomena (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="ref-6-1215">Gotlib et al., 2007</xref>).</p>
			<p>The use of GIS tools allows for the study of spatial patterns, the identification of relationships between different features, and the assessment of the situation in a specific area. The visualization, it allows for an understanding of the processes and phenomena occurring in a given area, which is crucial from the perspective of future engineers, planners, and architects.</p>
			<p>The implementation of GIS software in higher education education is becoming more common and popular.</p>
			<p>The results of the research indicate that the use of GIS tools has a very high potential for the use of this tool by diploma students and the future will see even more development (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="ref-9-1215">Panecki, 2021</xref>). The article identifies the topics, subjects and issues addressed in diploma theses, as well as the software used to visualize research results. The research indicated that every year more and more diploma students are reaching for GIS tools to present the effects and results of their thesis. Visualization influences better interpretation, identification of relations between studied phenomena, e.g. social and spatial. The results highlight that QGIS software are the most frequently chosen software for graphical presentation of results. This software is most often chosen because it is free and available to students (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="ref-10-1215">Pokojska et al., 2017</xref>). Diplomates used ArcGIS software only when they had access to free software obtained in academic classes. Further research should consider the perspective of incentives for students to use modern technologies in their theses. The use of GIS tools in the thesis in the future can contribute to informed design and preparation for professional work-as an urban planner or space designer among others. </p>
