This paper shows the methodological approach in order to represent cartographically the human activities that modify the natural landscape in Mexico through four periods: precolonial, colonial, «porfiriato» and present time. The methodology has an author's criterion, this is applied in several maps that have four levels of legend as it is showed by sorne examples. These maps are a part of the environment section of the National Atlas of Mexico.
