Abstract


The global port industry represents a pole of economic development due to its importance in the management and distribution of various goods. This activity, in its construction and operation processes, generates a series of environmental impacts, which can lead to the appearance of socio-environmental conflicts. The objective of this critical analysis was to reflect on the port of the city of Coquimbo, in recent industrial expansion, focusing on two aspects: i) identification of a map of users and ii) generation of management proposals from an interdisciplinary and socio-ecological point of view. A relevant aspect in the discussion of port management is to assume the physical space as a resource and the possibility of a co-management system among stakeholders; both elements constitute a window of opportunity for the prevention of conflicts and to strengthen the links between port and city. Finally, the port industry faces challenges in order to effectively and proactively link with the urban environment and social groups
