Valencian rural areas and the territorial effects of COVID-19: an analysis of pre- and post-pandemic population trends (2010-2022)

The current physiognomy and problems of rural and urban territories in the Valencia Region are directly related to the demographic processes linked to the rural exodus of the 1960s. After a phase of expansion and economic crisis during the first decade of the 21st century, in 2020 a new problem and/or conditioning factor arose, the COVID-19, which modified the daily life, ruins and dynamics of the population and their way of relating to their environment. In our research, we chose to check whether, because of COVID-19, there has been a change in population distribution patterns and, therefore, in the Valencian territory and the creation of new metropolitan rings. Furthermore, the aim is to analyse whether there are differences in the impact of COVID-19 between rural and urban municipalities. To this end, population data from the Population Register and Residential Variation for the period 2010 and 2022 have been extracted and demographic and statistical calculations have been carried out (Student’s t-test and Pearson’s correlation). Among the main results, it is observed that COVID-19 has a lower effect in rural areas of Valencia. Moreover, these areas show a positive demographic trend for the period 2020-2022. This represents a break in the trend in rural areas of Valencia, although it is beginning to show signs of exhaustion and a return to the pre-pandemic trend. Finally, population growth has not directly influenced the improvement in demographic indicators.
