Abstract

The impact of Wikiloc hiking and mountain bike routes on the publicly accessible part of Monte de El Pardo is investigated. The analysis is based on a representative sample of routes: 366 hiking and 364 mountain bike routes. In addition to fieldwork, aerial photographs, a Geographic Information System (GIS), advanced statistical analysis software, and scientific bibliography databases are used. It is concluded that Wikiloc causes a negative environmental impact by contributing to an increase in the number of visitors, widening roads, creating new paths, and exacerbating the loss of vegetation cover and erosive processes, among other consequences. However, these impacts are limited because the oak forest is regenerating in the spaces between roads to such an extent that in some areas its density does not allow it to pass through. It seems that the balance of pros and cons of Wikiloc is positive, considering environmental and social aspects. However, it is highly recommended that additional measures are taken to improve Wikiloc’s impact on the environment.
