This paper is an approach to the study of the economic and legal framework in which the first Castilian cadastre, known as the Ensenada Cadastre, was set on stream (18th century). It covers the method and conduct of the verifications, the resultant documentation and the degree of accuracy and reliability of the information gathered and the reasons why the Single Tax never was introduced.
