As a result of the failure of the large 18th century reservoirs in El Gascó, Valdeinfierno, and above all, Puentes, an unprecedented disaster in the Spanish hydraulics industry, this type of constructions was almost completely dismissed up until the mid 1930's. However, after much scientific debate and intense controversy, this situation was later overcome with the help of various factors which favoured these reservoirs. These were namely: adverse meteorological conditions, the reopening of the School of Civil Engineering, water legislation and, finally, the Regenerationist movement.
