Marriage, SpainAbstract
This study marriage patterns in Spain between 1975 and 1995 views Spanish marriage patterns within the broader European context. A variety of methodologies are used to measure the rise during the 1980s and 1990s in the age at first marriage. This followed a decline in the age at marriage during the 1960s and 1970s with lower rates of permanent celibacy. The marriage pattern of today is characterised by a return to a pattern of late and not universal marriage as present in Spain between the end of the Civil War and the 1960s. The trends in age at marriage in Spain resembled those in other European countries but occurred somewhat later.
