The Chilean case gives the example of an economy switching from a strongly inward oriented to an outward oriented economy and is instructive for Third World countries, and particularly those in Latin America which are presently changing policies from inward to outward orientation. In spatial terms the areas with rich endowment in natural resources can make an important contribution to regional growth, through increasing activities on those industries geared to export markets.
