The purpose of this paper is to gain a better understanding of the basic mechanisms that facilitate advances in knowledge of the working of physical and social environments, as well as their interactions. This objective is reached by starting from the theoretical model of possibilism, of this enrichment through structuralist contributions (such as the General Theory of Systems) and of recent theoretical perspectives, such as those based on the Theory of Global Change.
