Historical geography of the royal sites: Alóndiga, Aceca and Barciles, depopulated places of the king in the Tagus valley

To understand the landscape of the present it becomes necessary to know the landscape of the past. For this reason, cadastral geo-historical sources are of particular value. The vocation of universal search of the Ensenada Cadastre makes of is documents a unique source for the study of the territory of the Crown of Castile. Unlike some other European cadasters, the Ensenada’s one includes the properties and sites of the king. In this work we study the configuration of three depopulated properties owned by the Crown, linked to the Royal Site of Aranjuez: Alóndiga, Aceca and Barciles, all of them irrigated by the Jarama’s Royal Canal. This will allow us to reconstruct the landscape and the land uses of this space in the mid-eighteenth century and to assess the quality and complementarity of the data provided by the different documentary collections of the Ensenada cadastre for this kind of territories.
