Abstract


The american cities ofthe Austrias period disputed Madrid's main title of imperial city. Mexico besides being a political and administrative city, as well as, head of the Viceroyalty will also develop the above mentioned metropolitan role. Both cities possessed the main organs of governement and also maintained a large number of burocrats. The character of centrality may be considered in the main plaza, «plaza mayor» became an essential component of that space; but, whereas in Madrid it represented a municipal power symbol, the mexican «plaza mayor» concentrated ali its municipal, political, commercial and ecclesiastic attributes of power.
