This article is a review af the main contributions of the Anglosaxon, French and Spanish geographical schools to the study of the flood hazard. lt focuses on the different periods in which these contributions locate themselves, and, also, on the different conceptual and thematic frameworks characterizing them. Our aim is to demostrate the existence of a clear procese of intemalizing the flood hazard into the wider setting of human and social factors. Thus floods should not be studied exclusively from a physical point of view but rather, they must be seen in the light of the historical, social and economic structures influencing nature-society relations.
