During the first half of the century, the valencian fishing sector got important investments of capital and lured a great amount of workers, to the extent that in many towns it became the main employing sector. With the industrial and tourist development of the coast, the crisis of fisning communities comes about: the activity is abandoned in exchange for other jobs on the land, better paid and lesa laborious. Nowadays, the sector is distinguished by the limited number of direct workers (half the number employed forty years ago), the high proportion of pensioners and the large group of people depending economically on one or the other group. Among the active workers there is a predominance of those born in the present town ofresidence and ofthose from other valencian towns; among the foreigners there is a majority of andalusians.
