Abstract

The preferences for different places to live 1s related to the mental image of each person about the chosen and other areas. This subject is therefore of much interest for perception geographers. P. Gould and others were pioneers in this field. In Spain, several works (Estelianez, 1981: Oliva, 1982) used same methodolgy. On the other hand, this subject is itself of interest because it may help to understand spatial behaviors such as migration among others.

The purpose ofthis paper is to discuss the method proposed initially by P. Gould and his group to determine residential preferences showing its main difficulties and to propose some valid and useful alternatives. The results of a survey on the residential aestrability in the 17 Spanish regions addressed to Universities students are also included.
