This paper examines the evolution ofthe population and the economically active population ofthe thirteen largest mining towns in Mexico, in the last four decades. Only metallic mining and coal mining towns are considered. The aim of the study is to determine whether the crisis currently faced by the sector has resulted in a dimirushing labour force in the mines of these towns or not. The paper is based on official statistical data as well as field-work data collectd in several mining towns.
