Abstract

The main objective of this paper is to analyze the configuration of the spanish territory in large areas. This can be made studying the spatial interaction of the telephonic flows. Networks which are articulated from the telecommunication and telematic flows have some different characteristics of the general transportation networks. The study of the telephonic flows allow us to give out two significative characteristics: the first one is the control hierarchy, since flows are clearly asymmetric, and make stand out again the inequalities among different provinces and, more important, among provinces and metropolitan areas; the second one is the spatial independence, since distance is secundary in the spatial configuration of the flows, especially in the most high level of the metropolitan hierarchy. Main flows are always directed to the provinces which have the greatest level of services and population concentration, inndependently of the distance. Madrid controls the national structure of the telephonic flows, followed by Barcelona.
