Abstract

The critical situations of the great recession (economic crash of 2008 and subsequent years) and the great pandemic (COVID-19 of 2020 and subsequent years) caused a differentiated impact on population mobility, especially regarding those people of immigrant origin who carried out their jobs in two labor sectors, that of agriculture and that of home care. These sectors group activities that, among others, have come to be considered as essential jobs, since the performance of these tasks guarantees social production and reproduction. Therefore, the objective of this research is to analyze the relationship established in Spain between the mobility of migrants and essential works during the crises. To this aim, the information provided by the Continuous Sample of Working Lives is used for two specific moments, those of 2010 and 2020, since this research source reflects the employment situation of the population affiliated with the Spanish Social Security who, having been born abroad, is employed in the agricultural and household regimes at critical moments. The results obtained allow to shed light on the stratification of mobility according to geographical origin, as well as on the socio-spatial dimension that the essential work and migration relationship acquires in Spain.
