Innovative environment and local development: shoemaker local systems of inner Spain

The paper researchs into three inner Spain towns specialized in footwear industry, whose recent development is explained by the theoretical approach associated with the concepts of local productive system and innovative environment. After a short presentation of the theoretical framework, the evolution of footwear industry is studied in Spain and, in detail, in the quoted towns, focusing on the origin of local industry, the networks of firms, the role of social agents and the innovative effort, finishing with some proposals for intervention.
