This paper proposes a methodology to evaluate land capability on the basis of the resource requirements by human activities that can be implemented in the Mediterranean region. According to the activities' resource requirements three kind of parameters referring to land characteristics are distinguished: exclusion, definition and specific parameters. The former refers to land characteristics that can limit activities, depending on their ranges. The second refer to non-limiting land characteristics that have different meaning for activities, depending on their ranges. The latter refer to land characteristics that are only relevant in establishing management regimes for activities. From exclusion and definition parameters, indices of exclusion and capability are defined which allow delimiting the non-excluded area and analysing its attractiveness for the activities respectively. The values and weights assigned to the parameters make the capability indices sensible to the competition between similar activities for natural resource, in such a way that the most profitable or attractive achieve the highest capability. The approach has been developed to provide useful information for generating multiple land use options.
