Abstract

The Buenos Aires agglomeration. Centrality and suburbanisation (1949-1990). The periods of change of the spatial structuring processes of Buenos Aires are closely linked to the periods of economic, social and political change affecting the development of the metropolis as a whole. To that respect, three penods of different characteristics can be pointed out after 1940: 1940-1960, 1960-1980 y 1980-1990.

In this paper these periods are analised, identifying in each case a distinctive group of«socio-spatial» rrocesses. This allows to explai n the spatial patterns of social differen tiation and the «socia map» which are characteristic of each period. Within this context, state urban policies are also treated as far a they permit, impede or selectively condition the development of these processes.

A map showing the aggregate effect of these factors over the spatial structure of the city is presented here.
