This article attempts to establish the differential characteristics of portuguese immigration with respect to other movements of foreigners towards our country, both from the EC and from the Third World. 'This objective is followed throughout the various sections, approaching the question from multiple perspectives: the specificity of the spanish destination in the context of portuguese rnigration, a quantification ofthe portuguese residents in Spain, the characteristics ofthe collective group -sex, age, cultural level and professional qualification-, and a detennination of their level of income anda their degree of social int:egration. The goal, in sum, is to bring up to date the available knowledge on this immigration, revising the existing information and pointing out the most important areas in which knowledge of it is most lacking globally.
Throughout the article capeverdian immigration is also referred to; the association of portuguese and capeverdian migratory movements is justified by the existence of noteworthy similarities between ooth -in respect to destinations, worker occupations, etc.-, similarities that have their origin in the fact that Cape Verde was a portuguese colony until 1975.
