The tuna nets of the Gulf of Cadiz were the support for one of the most important fisheries in preindustrial Europe. The literature describes the fishing methods and the localization of the tuna nets, but does not provide quantitative evidence oftheir output. On the basis of a historical record of the bluefin tuna catches, collected in the XVIIIth century by the house of Medina Sidonia, we have estimated a series offishing production for the period 1525-1763. Such series shows the secular trend and the cyclical tluctuations ofthe bluefin tuna fishery.
